Staining my concrete patio with a water based stain and I've already done two coats

First coat looked good, now it looks really good

My question is-will it hurt anything to do a 3rd coat? I wouldn't mind it a tad darker so will that help or just hurt things?

Don't want to overdue it but I have an extra gallon I haven't opened.

I can look but it's from Sherman Williams. So far
It looks great

One thing is I like the rough sand paper like texture so I'm wondering If a 3rd coat will get rid of some of that

If that's the case then I won't do one

Make sure you seal it after you are done.. I don't think adding a 3rd coat will hurt in any way but I've never stained concrete.

BTW Sherman Williams products are top notch.

I happen to work for Sherwin Williams so I'm assuming you are using the H&C water based concrete stain. You are good using as many coats as you want as far as deepening the color. If its a solid stain, you may get less of a texture with more coats. If it is the semi transparent, it will continue to penetrate and won't affect the texture. You definitely want to use a clear sealer after.

Nice, I used to work for PPG and would have given the exact same advice.

Do you advise to rough up the solid or semi-transparent before you apply the clear coat?

ETA: rough up as in a fine sand paper

Not necessary to rough it up. That's a the way to go on wood, but the sealer should bond just fine especially if the concrete is porous.

Ok good to know. The guy at SW said dealer is optional and would make it glossy. How shiny would it be?

Will it make it darker? What are the pros?

Quit reading after this. Use acid stain that water based crap will peal up in a year.

See if SW carries Insl-x oil based sealer. If so use that.

Sealing keeps the color and prevents from having chip marks in the concrete for most part.
Im sure it comes in gloss, semi gloss, or flat options. Definitely need to seal imo

You definitely want to seal it, shouldn't affect the color much if any. Use a xylene or solvent based sealer and you'll get a lot more longevity than if you were to use a water based or oil based sealer.

I hate oil based anything when it comes to paint
