I know the OT has nothing but ballers who own schools or just pay teachers off so I expect good answers. Short of beating your kids arse, what do you do when they make bad grades? We are talking about 6th-8th grade here. Our approach has been to take away shite but it typically is short sighted because it only changes perormance for a short time. Any other novel approaches?

Take things away for the 9 weeks not just a week or two.

Tutor your kids. Meet with the teachers and determine better learning strategies. It isn't always about motivation.

How bad of grades are we talking? What are your expectations? Are they underachieving or just not capable?

Starts with the kid giving a frick. If they don't, then nothing will work. I don't know how you fix kids who don't care. I was a people pleaser, so I did well in school, because I liked the praise. My 17 year old sister couldn't give a shite about anything. Nothing works for her. Nature over nurture sometimes. And, I'm pro arse-whipping

Get him into a routine of doing homework and studying every night for a specific time instead of playing on his phone and computer.

pay something for good grades? ... not sure (i don't have kids but i do teach) ... or take away everything he/she enjoys until they realize good grades are a requirement ...

So kid has been a habitual bottom feeder. No matter what the bar is he shoot for that. Minimal type kid. He will excel at life because of his personality and he is a bullshitter- future OT'er for sure. Kid usually has a F or D, but always squeaks by with only a D on report card.

How old are they? My kids just learned to live without their crap. Each kids is motivated differently. You need to to work on getting to know your kid. Talk to them about why they are struggling. Find out what they think about it and what they think may help them get better. You may be surprised.

Are the bad grades because they're dumb or not doing homework?

My son makes half arse decent grades because he does well on his classwork but consistently fails to do homework. I have taken everything away from him for months and it does nothing. I have to look at his homework every day to make sure he's done it because he'll say he has if I ask

Perhaps he has a learning disability? Once again, have you met with his teachers to discuss learning strategies?

Do you take the time to go over material with him?

Hate to be ugly, but if he is making bad grades in 6th grade, he probably didn't get a good base foundation of studying and doing homework at a young age. It may be too late now. Start teaching basic plumbing, A/C work, or welding, because that is likely his future.

Yeah my kid had a sweet ride in magnets if he just pulled a 2.5 but he just didn't give a frick and now he is in regular school.
