What do we expect from him this year? I have been excited about him since he was being recruited. I know that Welter will likely start (please don't make this a "bash Wellter" thread - the kid is busting his tail), but what do we think Beckwith will do? What role does he play?

What about the rest of the LBs? If they step up, this defense can be special.

I know Welter gets bashed a lot, but he's a good leader and has great football knowledge. Consistently gets the D in position. Expect Beckwith to make an impact. He will definitely see the field and make an impact. Get him ready to take over next year. This line backing corps is the strongest I've seen in awhile. It's three deep and oozing with talent. It'll definitely be the focal point of the team with two lockdown corners. This D will be amazing.

I expect a ton of blitzing from the LBs to compensate for the DL. And if the DL has a big year look for a monster top 5 D. Chief is just too good.

Also a coach on the field, a gym rat, high football IQ, and his motor never quits. He's deceptively fast as well.

Its a battle between the two. Beckwith has more upside but Welter is very dependable and is becoming an avg SEC MLB in his own right.
Looks like a toss up at this point, I expect both to play alot, but I think Welter holds him off all year.

The first real positive news I heard about Beckwith came the other day in one of Les's interviews. He said Beckwith had a good scrimmage with a couple of big plays! His time is close.

According to this article, he's been working a little bit with the 1's. I'm hoping that continues and he gets some PT with Welter.

Beckwith will have his opportunities but Welter is much better at being pushed around by opposing OG's...

Welter is better right now with coverage, and Beckwith will be better against the run-heavy teams...Its a nice situation to have. When Beckwith gets the coverages down, he'll be a beast..

The Mustang Package is going to be used a lot this year. Especially against AU and Ole Piss with those gimicky spreadish offenses.

So we will have Beckwith and DJ as MLBs. With one very large DT in the middle and the two studs at DE. I like this look very much. Beckwith could line up and back off the D-Line during the opposing QB audibles and really mess things up.

My confidence in lb deployment took a huge hit last season.

There were multiple times, I'd even say the majority of times we ran Nickle or dime.

Guess who's not on the field? Kwon. Why? I don't know. I'm not so sure what the thought process is because some of the lb sampling we saw last year simply did not work.

Kwon will start on the outside (Mustang or not). I'd like to see Deion Jones and/or Lamar Louis battle for the other side. Thats a big LB corp. Last year was hard on the LBs. The D-Line was weak and some played injured. They let too many people run bye untouched. That's going to be a 5 yard gain all day long. DTs and DE have to slow down the RBs and mobile QBs either by blocking lanes or at least knicking them.

This is all in the secret playbook.

Welter is a low level sec linebacker that would do well in another conference. Welter will get subbed out for 2-3 series a game just like last year. He will start and play the most but it doesn't mean he is the best option.

It is up to Beckwith to force Welter to the bench. I don't mean this to insult Welter, but the reason Welter plays is because Beckwith has not taken his job. That's what I want from the Beckwith, to live up to his talent and force his way onto the field.
