You do know how much money they have raised since the start of it, don't you?

Most I know do the challenge, but also donate.

if the people who did the challenge had given the $100, it would be approximately 10x that number

Yep, which is exactly why I find it absurd.

ALS is a terrible disease, nothing worse than watching your friends slowly die.

If the people who did the challenge ignored it and didn't donate or do the challenge, what's your made up number for donations?

If people weren't posting videos of it on Facebook like crazy, you think Zuckerberg would have done it? Bill Gates? Elon Musk? Drew Brees?

Most people are doing it for the attention rather than actually caring about ALS

You do realize that you donate money in addition to the challenge.. You also challenge more people, resulting in more money being raised.. It's a domino reaction..

If there was no "challenge" they probably wouldn't have raised 1/10th of what they have. The ice bucket is simply a marketing ploy, and it has worked immensely.

ALS was raising bank compared to previous years even before that.

My wife was the one who got the challenge. I then challenged her to think of a less popular charity that needs the money more. She failed.

it's a meta-evolutionary signalling. "i care" is a major peacocking move these days

i really do wonder how people can support this

I'm sure a lot of folks who did the challenge did donate as well. You seriously think Les Miles didn't write a check from his account in Texas?

Like that damn Danny Thomas and his Children's Hospital. Or Jerry and his kids. These people are the worst.

Do you think Bill Gates is going to donate more to charity in general this year because of the challenge? I doubt it. He's already allocated what he's giving to charity - which is a huge amount - but if he donates to ALS because of a popularity contest, that means some other charity doesn't get the donation.

The real question is does the ice bucket challenge cause people to donate more in general - or do they just take money that they would have given to another charity to make the donation?

if you got challenged, would you give $100 or would you puss out and give $10 and post a video to show your facebook how caring you are?
