do you buy generic extra virgin or is there a brand you swear by?
i know some people buy the 'good' stuff for dipping and some cheaper brand for cooking.
i figure if anyone knows their stuff when it comes to olive oil its this board. TIA

I'm on my first bottle of California olive oil. I think the brand is California Olive Ranch. I've always bought extra virgin regardless of brand.

I use a LOT of olive oil so I get generic. I found out from Alton Brown that 'Light' Olive Oil is good for frying since it has a much higher smoking point than other olive oils. I've tried it and he's right.

We went to Sandro's Trattoria in Metairie and they served toasted bread with olive oil for dipping. It tasted so good, we asked them what brand they used and the answer was Boscoli. Turns out, the restaurant is run by the same Boscoli family that makes the Italian products. We've used that ever since.
If money were no object, I'd go with something made from Castelvetrano olives - they're the best olives that ever crossed my gums. They have that olive oil at Zuppardo's, but it's a bit pricy.

I use California Olive Ranch.....too much fraud in the imported olive oil business. Supermarket priced imported oils are junk.
Best I ever had was bought directly from an agricultural coop in Tuscany....pressed not more than a week before. It tasted alive.

There's a new place in Pass Christian where you can try many different types of olive oils and mix your own. Kind of like a wine tasting place, but for olive oil. They have some pretty good stuff. Think it is called Pass Christian Olive Oil Co.

I use Provvista brand (made by someone else in Spain) to cook with and Olio Verde for everything else.
