I ran across this tree this weekend. I've never seen one like it before.

Someone suggested it may be some sort of plum tree and that seems plausible. The fruit has a pit as you can see in the picture below

Copiah County, MS for reference

and now the real question... anyone know if deer love these like they do persimmons?

Yes, deer love them. FWIW, I've never seen a crabapple tree that loaded down

Seems like it could definitely be but this throws me off:

The centre of the fruit contains five carpels arranged star-like, each containing one or two seeds.

unless that pit will split once it ripens

I really wanted to taste it but my dad was adamant about making sure it wasn't a poisonous fruit for some reason

Did you at least take a bunch to grow in pots at the house then transplant in a few years?

Me either. Something must be keeping the squirrels, birds and coons run off. Keep your eyes peeled for the roo garoo and zig-a-zees!

100% wild plum. Makes a very nice jelly if one knows what to do.

The trees I have about don't seem to get much attention from the deers. Nowhere near as desirable as persimmon.

I'm beginning to second guess my initial assumption that it's crabapple. The ones I'm used to seeing look like this:

Shubuta is correct, crab apples have a dried blossum looking black thing on the bottom. Kinda like a mayhaw.

Thats what I'm thinking.

It looks close but there are a few major difference between the pictures of crabapples and these.

The seeds are different and there is no little apple thingy on the bottom of the fruit

Now that you know, eat a couple in front of him and then start complaining of sever stomach pains.
