For uploading film for football and using Microsoft Office. Must have quick startup and good battery.

Is the chromebook the way to go? If so, which one is best?

TIA

As opposed to a liquid device?

For what? Uploading film? What type of film do you have? And uploading it to where?

Why? For uploading footballs?

You mentioned Microsoft Office. What do you need with Microsoft Office? Docs and Spreadsheets? No problem, OSX, Android, ChromeOS can all handle those needs. But if you actually need Microsoft Office for some reason, you'll need something that will run Microsoft Office.

Don't take this the wrong way, but are you slow?

Don't be a dick

Film from an HD camera to hudl.

Because I don't want to always have it plugged in and can't stand waiting for a device to startup and get running or have to constantly reboot. I don't like staying at the office all night and I teach, so it needs to start as soon as I take it out of my briefcase.

I prefer Word and Excel, but could live with Google docs... I don't know if Google has a spreadsheet program.

No.

So portability and price are not an issue?

Not everyone knows what exactly a Chromebook is. Don't chastise the misknowledged, but the misknowledgists.

OP, please tell me/us a little more about Hudl. Is it a cloud-based system? Do you upload files through a proprietary file manager? Do they get uploaded straight to the web? Is there a client that hangs out on the PC that you use to watch/view/upload files?

Also, you mention Microsoft Office. There are two operating systems manufacturers that will allow you to run this natively: Microsoft (Windows) and Apple (OSX). You should have free access to web-based, basic versions that will very likely do all you need them to do (you weren't very specific in your previous post as to what you are doing with them...traditionally when you're describing what you need in terms of help with technology, you should do your best to bore the reader/advisor to death with detail (for instance, "I am a teacher who would like a spreadsheet program (like Excel) that will allow me to keep my grade book. I teach 5 classes and would like to keep them on separate tabs in a single file, preferably. Each class had 20 students. I usually like to add a function to drop the lowest test score. I would like one final tab in the same file that pulls the data from the other sheets so that I can compare my averages across the classes and measure their deviation from the whole group's average" would be a good example of being specific enough that someone could say "hey, google docs is free and works. Sign up for a hotmail account and use their free web apps. If you want to pay for it, Microsoft Office would work. Pages would work if you decided to buy an OSX machine. And, lastly, you could use LibreOffice, which is also free and very comparable to MS Office 2003.").

Lastly, please describe the form factor that you want. You said you don't want to leave it plugged in all the time, but that doesn't necessarily mean you want to take the device with you or want a portable device. Will a desktop do? Traditional tower? One that fits in the Palm of your hand? What about a laptop? If you want a laptop, how big of a screen would you like? Do you prefer power or portability? What kind of battery life would you want/need/expect? Would you trade battery life for screen resolution? How big are the files that you need? How do the files that are being uploaded (presumably you are taking files from somewhere and putting them online) get onto the computer (USB, FireWire, sd card, magic garbanzo beans)? what type of file do you need it to be in to be uploaded?

Please don't feel obligated to answer each question individually or act like this is an exhaustive list of the things i would like to know, but please go into a little more detail describing your needs now that you (hopefully) understand more of what I/others are looking for.

I am too lazy to go look and see if it was mentioned, but for your router qualities thread, things like parental controls and timed internet on/off periods may be useful to include. I think they're fairly basic but less than universal. I'm probably hearing hoofprints and thinking of zebras instead of horses though. But parents with teenagers (or kids in general) may like the ability to say "well, MAC address x cannot use the internet from 1800-1200" or "we only use the internet in this household for these hours"

It's probably not the people that need help with router selection that are worried with that sort of thing, but it's still novel features that may impress someone who needs help nonetheless.
