PSA: milk crates are not effective rod holders

Here at Grand Isle for ride the bull. A couple of those guys are fishing on Elmer's Island. There's a bunch of white trout and a few specs here hitting shiners on the surface. We're catching them and also catching crabs to use for bait tomorrow. I figure let me throw something out with a piece of cut white trout and see if I can't get something big on the bottom. So I rig my pen battle up with a piece of cut white trout, casted out and I put it in my milk crate that I use in my kayak as a rod holder. I put my 8 pound anchor in in the crate thinking that will be enough weight to keep anything big enough from pulling it over and pulling my rod out of the holder.
Well you can probably see where this is going.
I go to run the crab traps. I turn around look at my milk crate it's tipped over my pen battle, rod, everything is gone.
Worst of all, it was a birthday gift for my wife.
My strategy: buy a new one really quick and don't tell my wife shite about how tough one she bought me for my birthday got lost.
Please learn from my mistakes and don't let this happen to you.

I can't help myself, how would they ever be?
Posted on 8/15/14 at 7:22 pm to DrTyger
They work for me. I'll keep using it until I have an issue with it.

Damn, you probably caught a shark

Was what I was thinking too.

I thought a doctor would be smarter than this

Yeah I would never troll with it in the crate. I have a Scotty for that.
Sucks you lost all your gear man! Prayers sent.

How deep the water you fishing. If not to deep go back with a large magnet with a rope attach try to find it.

Man I wish I was there with y'all. Wife had an opinion on the trip and it wasn't favorable. I'll get a half day in the lake tomorrow morning.
Good luck doc! Catch a monster!

Get a helical tie down anchor from lowes or homedepot

Live and learn.
I troll via 1 1/2" PVC (9" long) angled 45 degrees on my crate. Crate is strapped down via 1" wide webbing factory on Jacksons. I added synch belt so I could tighten it down. A fish would have to flip my boat for me to lose the rod or anything in the crate.

I ain't reading, but I'm gonna guess you lost your rod. Do you need one?

To be fair, he didn't have any place to put it. We were all using our kayak rod holders to keep our rods in place. But he pulled up in this contraption, and I don't know where you would put a rod holder. Damn boy ain't got no sense.

Lose a rod and show up in a micro skiff, you're going to catch a little shite.

If I troll in my yak it's gonna be on the rear 2 rod holders on my crate, and it's strapped in with 4 short lenghts of bungee cord tied into crate that attach tightly to factory rings on FS12T. Rod gonna snap before that thing comes out.

Tie it down, dummy.
ETA: that still sucks.

Doesn't seem like you thought that through. 8 lbs is nothing.
Did I miss something? Seems he didn't catch anything.
On another note, there are a ton of folks down here.
