Were older generations better wing shooters than us?
Posted by ducksnbass on 8/15/14 at 8:34 am00
Reason I ask is because I have a growing fondness for older shotguns. I have purchased two Auto-5's and a 60's era 1100 in the last 6 months all three of which came with fixed full choke barrels. I know there are older guns out there with mod and imp cyl barrels but they seem to be very rare. Then there's the guns that were fixed full but the barrel was cut down and an ugly poly-choke was installed. What is the reasoning behind all the full chokes? A friend of mine suggested that most of the time a man would have one shotgun that had to do everything from ducks to deer. Just wondering what some of your thoughts are on this.

Everyone I duck and dove hunt with uses a full choke.

There is a reason why double barrels were so popular for so long. Instant choke selection....

I still use a full choke late season.
I think the older folks had more birds and more days to hunt.

My 1100 has a mod barrel. Hell, every old 1100 just like it that I have seen has a mod barrel. No idea they were so rare

I consider myself in the moderate to good range with wing shooting.
My dad and uncle can run circles around me.
Not that we have ever shot more than our limit, but ive seen them two pick up the slack for everyone else to the tune of +100 doves before everyone else can get to 10. Missing is rare

I know everything is "relative", but the cost of a box of shells was a major point at one time to a certain generation and therefore that certain generation passed on the importance of making every shot count on to another of what most would consider to be an "older" generation. The same theory and beliefs were taught with regard to rimfire "cahh tre jez".

I'm not against a full choke it just seems that a modified might be better as an all around choke. Obviously I'm wrong. I guess I just need to work on my shooting.

They may not be rare...maybe everyone that has one is hanging on to it. Most of the ones I've seen for sale are full chokes. Again, just going based on what I've seen while shopping around.
I would think you'd be a better shot if not killing something meant you didn't eat.

A5, Model 12? ...About as reliable as it gets.

Intersting. I have always used a modified when hunting both. Always seem to do good.

Lead shot.

Because most folk did not have the funds for multiple guns. You had to hunt deer, squirrels, wabbits, ducks, doves, and robins with the same gun. My uncle still shoots a full choke Sweet 16 at everything. I saw him kill 23 doves in the same hunt with a box of shells once (true story). He said as a kid he tried to kill 25 squirrels with one box, but ended up one short when a fox squirrel got caught in some vines while falling and he had to shoot him out. I killed a deer with that gun when we were rabbit hunting once. Shot her in the ear hole at about 5 steps. Was glorious.

My 1100 is over 20 years old and has a Mod. Never have used a choke on dove and duck. Always do good. Hell, even shoot skeet with it and do well, also.

Squirrel hunting was also very popular and a full choke is the only way to go.
We play a game called bump when shooting skeet. If you don't shoot with a full choke and powder the skeet, you will get bumped often.
