turned on my 2-in-1 yesterday so that i could take it to the bar to do some writing and this is what i get:

the message says
quote:

Windows Update
Important updates are avaialble. Go to PC settings to install them.

i would gladly install the updates, but i can't get off of this screen. i can shut down properly, but i'm stuck at this screen

i googled and got no help. i know it's probably some simple solution, so that's why i came here

How can you properly shut it down, there is no shut down option on the screen? Have you configured the physical button to shutdown the computer?

since this died out, i'm going to bump it. does anybody have any way to get to some sort of safe mode in win8?

how do i just do a restore of the whole thing if i can't get past that blue screen at startup?

Must've missed this the first time around.

That's a new one. Do no hotkey functions work on the keyboard? Like Windows key + i to access settings? Or pressing F8/F2/F12/Del (one of those) during initial boot?

i will try. i've tried the F8 at startup on another laptop and couldn't get into safe mode

what should i try other than F8? this was my first real foray into win8 and i didn't learn the functions very well

Ah crap, i completely forgot about this, grad school has been working me. What is the model of your Asus? On some you can boot into repair mode by pressing the power button while holding volume up.

Again, sorry for leaving you hanging.

How to Restore an ASUS Laptop to the Factory Settings
by Ruri Ranbe, Demand Media

Your business might need to restore an ASUS laptop to its factory settings for a variety of reasons. Formatting the hard drive and reinstalling the operating system can eliminate virus infections, revive the computer from system failure, and even improve computing performance. Erasing the contents of the drive is also critical if you intend to sell the laptop; if you neglect to do this, the next owner will be able to access your critical business data. ASUS laptops contain a recovery partition that includes software designed to restore the laptop to its original condition.
Step 1

Power on or reboot the ASUS laptop. When the ASUS logo screen appears, press "F9" to access the hidden partition.
Step 2

Press "Enter" when Windows Boot Manager appears. Choose your language from the options and click "Next."

Step 3

Review the on-screen messages and then click "Next." Select one of the following options: "Recover Windows to First Partition Only," "Recover Windows to Entire HD" or "Recover Windows to Entire HD With Two Partitions."
Step 4

Click "Next" and follow the on-screen instructions to restore the ASUS laptop to the factory defaults

With the friggin hybrid boot on windows 8, it is nigh impossible to do anything by key spamming. Some manufacturers have a keyset you can press to enter a repair mode

from power off -> press power button while holding volume up and if that doesn't work try holding volume down and press power.

if you have access to another machine with windows 8, you should be able to make a recovery image that you may can use
