What did Bill O'Brien do at Ped State that was so special to get hired by HOU?

He beat Wisconsin twice... great

He beat Michigan once... great

He got blown out by Ohio State 63-14

Overall record of 15-9... average

Shouldn't he have proven more before getting hired as the main guy for an NFL team? I know he inherited a tough situation but he really didn't show much in his 2 years at Ped State. I would have waited a couple more years before rolling the dice on him.

I agree he's waaay overhyped. We'll see how he does with Houston.

I don't see no difference between that and coordinators getting jobs (which he previously succeeded in doing).

He didn't cover up a massive pedophile so he's got that going for him

I think he was getting contacted by some NFL teams before he took the Penn St job. Can't be sure though.

he was a top assistant under Belichick at new England for a few years. That usually puts you on the radar.

was able to keep young boys out of the PState shower, that is worth a NFL job considering the damage Sanduskey did.

Got Matt McGloin into the NFL somehow, and dealt with an essential death penalty, and won some games.

QB coach in New England, and OC in New England. Pretty well respected, and was likely going to get an NFL job straight from being a coordinator if he didn't go to Penn State

This - he was being tabbed as a future NFL coach for a while before he went to coach college football.

Don't discredit the job he did at PSU, either. Considering his situation he did well was reviewed with universal acclaim.

High-end pro assistant.
Head coaching experience, with some success, in college.
Solid resume.

You may think he's joking, but what did Brady do before or after obrien? He won both his MVPs under Bill O and hasn't done much since. O Brien is to Brady what Payton is to Brees.

Well, he won two Super Bowls and Super Bowl MVP's(2002 & 2004) prior to O'Brien's arrival in New England. He also won a MVP award while O'Brien was only an offensive assistant - not QB coach, OC, or play caller.
