Baghdad — Kurdish forces, supported by U.S. air strikes, took back two towns in northern Iraq from Islamic State militants but it will take time to turn the tide of the conflict, a senior Kurdish official told Reuters.
Hoshiyar Zebari said the Kurds had recaptured the towns of Guwair and Makhmur. Asked how long the United States would have to continue airstrikes to help the Kurds defeat the Islamic State, Zebari said: "As President Obama said, there is no time limit."
U.S. President Barack Obama said on Saturday that it would take some time to tackle Islamic State fighters whose latest push through northern Iraq has rattled the Baghdad governmentand its Western allies.

Good news. Proof that we should have not have pulled out in the first place.

I thought the Islamic state would not be used as their name? Someone forgot this!
I'm glad the Kurds are kicking some arse and I'm glad US air power is bringing some pain.

So how many SF dudes do we have running around with the Kurds? I thought the 300 or so we sent a month ago were all supposed to stay in Baghdad.

A Lot.

This will go much the way the Afghanistan war went initially. Our airpower there blasted holes in the Taliban lines allowing the Northern Alliance to run amok.
Same strategy here. We do the air, local forces do the ground. ISIS will fold up like the cheap deck of cards they are.

Amazing how the thinking changes 180 degrees when you're suddenly the one in charge.

I like fighting a global war on radical Muslims when the fight is our air power with Muslims vs Muslims on the ground.

... but lost another, more strategic one :
"Kurdish fighters battling ISIS militants lost control of the strategically important Iraqi town of Jalawla, two Kurdish officials and police officials told CNN.
Clashes erupted Sunday morning for control over the predominately Kurdish town that links Kurdish areas to Baghdad, and the Kurdish Pershmerga fighters eventually withdrew from Jalawla. "

Jalawla.
If I'm not mistaken they've been fighting over this town for about a month now.
Good to see the Kurds didn't pull full retreat though like the Arabs in the south. They just withdrew a little to regroup and are now fighting instead of just fortifying certain cities.

I really hope Obama steps up and arms the Kurds to the teeth. It's obvious that Iraq will either be divided according to Joe Biden's prophetic blunder (when he made it)...or taken over by Islamists. The lesser of two evils is to back the relatively moderate Kurds...and stay out of the extremists Religious dogfight.
In fact, I wish Obama would do a full turnaround like Clinton; work with Conservatives to do a real Immigration reform with a LOCK DOWN Border, e-verify employment, voter ID, Welfare qualifiers...real Healthcare reform.
And a real attempt to unite the races/economic classes by getting the Regulatory dogs off the economy and letting it expand for them who WILL WORK.
I won't be holding my breath. The man is too damn arrogant to be a real leader.
