Buying a new desktop.....All-in-Ones or traditional?

I'm not someone who will "build their own" computer.
So I ask, which is considered "better"...all-in-ones or the traditional tower. I was ready to pull the trigger on an All in one touchscreen, but figured the tech board could help.
So, which is best? And are their deals that you know of?
info.....family with kids in elementary. So normal activities video, pics, bills, surfing, and I run some company activity (webex trainings) etc.

Suggestions? I was looking at something like the Dell @ BBuy. 24" 8gig and 1 TB memory. What is junk about them? I don't game and all that stuff, just work and surfing and family photos/videos, etc

The thing about all-in-ones is that they either use mobile-platform components or low-end desktop platform for the small footprint and heat mitigation, so they are not as powerful as a traditional tower at the same price point. All-in-ones are essentially laptops without the portability. The trade-off is the all-in-ones have larger screens for the desktop environment vs. laptops. Similar to a laptop being permanently connected to a docking station. If something breaks, the whole unit has to be serviced, including the monitor. It has the upgradeability limitations of a laptop as well.
With a desktop, you get desktop platform components, which are always superior to its mobile counterpart dollar for dollar. The drawback here is that if you really, really want the touch-screen functionality, you'll need to buy a touch monitor separately, and they're about double the cost of a decent 1080p LED monitor. The touch screen is where a large chunk of the All-in-One price comes from.
Overall, for your purposes, either one at most price points will be fine. You will just get more for your dollar (for internal components) with the desktop platform.

Of course it is. They start at $1099 for a configuration that's slower than the lowest model Macbook Air. However, I suspect the Dell that OP is looking at is also close to $1,000 and isn't configured a whole lot better. In any case, OS X may be off the table depending on the type of WebEx training that will be conducted.

Except your desktop system comes with windows 8.
Whereas the iMac comes with OS X & iLife.
It's a perfect set up for his elementary school aged kids.
He doesn't need a system that "blows away" something.

He either wants Windows or OS X. Sounds like he was looking at Windows All-in-Ones, likely for work integration, which may have something to do with the WebEx training he provides. If he wanted OS X, this would be a different thread.

I got my wife an iMac for christmas last year. I knew exactly what I was getting her. She already had a macbook pro and wanted something for the office that would still integrate well with our iPhones and appleTV. It's not a power machine. But it's pretty and an interface she's used to...
Plus, and more importantly, "wife" is the keyword here.

That's another point. Windows dominates, overwhelmingly, pretty much every industry that uses computer. I would much rather my children learn the ins and outs of the dominant (and coincidentally more complicated) platform, including proper maintenance and security. Also, my kids are too young to know it yet, but the day they need a real computer is the day they learn to build one.
