Let me start off by saying that I worship at the fricking altar of Ryan Adams. Everything he was responsible for from "Faithless Street" right up through "Easy Tiger" is simply untouchable, in my opinion. Not to mention all the bootlegs and unreleased stuff I've accumulated. The guy is without question my favorite songwriter and all around favorite artist. But he's been in a very gradual decline since Easy Tiger. Cardinology was, in my opinion, a very good record, but not on par with his previous work. Ashes and Fire had flashes of extreme brilliance (the title track and Lucky Now" really stand out) but, on the whole, was just ok.

I've heard quite a bit of the new record now, and I'm depressed to say that none of it has really done much of anything for me, at all. Some of the lyrics, usually one of the guy's strengths, are just cringe-worthy. Anyway, I saw this this morning and just thought I'd share it.

quote:

If you roll straight from the end of Lewis’ album into the beginning of Adams’ self-titled record you would take a while to notice things had moved on: the guitars, organ, the richness in the backing voices - even the tempo - all play in the same patch of sand. This is rubbed in by the way Stay with Me could well be Petty and the Heartbreakers, a classic rock radio favourite in the making with its mid-tempo kick and promise of voices in unison one beery night.

While he is always more convincing and effective in country or pop mode, Adams’ 13th (give or take) album in 14 years is rockier than he has been in a while, pushing harder with sound more than tempo: there are the sharp guitars of Gimme Something Good and Trouble, the punchy drums of Shadows and Feels Like Fire and a rising tension in I Just Might, balanced by a bursting spirit in Kim.

But it doesn’t stop him recreating a Buckingham/Nicks/McVie sound in the backing vocals (and Johnny Marr in the guitar solo) for Am I Safe, taking it somewhere chiming in Tired of Giving Up or stripping everything away for an effortless heart trembler in My Wrecking Ball. So even if it’s not a great Ryan Adams album, it is still a pretty good one for anyone else.

Also, I know: TL;DR.

Wow this is disappointing news. I was expecting greatness.

Well, he's been sober for sometime now. Maybe that takes away from his artistic creativity?

For now, I'll wait to judge the album when it comes out. I've enjoyed Stay With Me and Gimmie Something Good so far.

Partially. But (and I'm not accusing her of being a Yoko or anything like that) I think being happily married to that smoking hot Mandy Moore is taking a toll as well.

"I love you, girl, it feel so right, stay with me."

"I love you, baby, hold me closer in the middle of the night."

Are you fricking shitting me?

Don't get me wrong, it didn't stop me from pre-ordering the vinyl, so I'll wait and give it a proper chance, for sure.

What???? I want some more "Don't waste my time/ This is it/This is really happening"; and "I know it's not a game/but it feels like losing when your love throws you away"

First, I honestly don't know if you're serious or being facetious here, so bear with me. "Rock n' Roll" was the exception in the whole era that I mentioned in my initial post. I really love "So Alive" and "Does Anybody Wanna Take Me Home" but I can pretty much take or leave the rest of that record.

I actually think "Fix it" is pretty brilliant, lyrically. That song is about an experience that everyone of us has or will go through in our lives and I can't imagine it being anymore well described than it is in that tune.
He's still gonna come up with stuff that he just hits out of the park, I'm sure. But I'm not sure his best days (musically) aren't behind him. And why wouldn't they be? He's clean and happily married. I'm happy for the guy. And his catalog up until this point means so much to me that you can have my fan-boy card when you pry it from my cold, dead, fingers. But it doesn't mean I have to love every single thing the guy does.

Stereogum's review says it's "a total knockout" fwiw. I'll judge for myself when it drops

I think it's kinda expected. Flame doesn't burn all the time. He'll find a way to find it again. Too talented a cat.

Cold Roses was his last album I really liked, but I saw him on his Cardinology tour and he is still incredible in a live setting.

My favorite was always a toss up between Cold Roses and Heartbreaker. Then I got the limited pressing of Love is Hell that Mobile Fidelity did and it shot right to the top. It's the most amazing thing I've ever heard. I would actually give up a testicle for them to re-do his entire catalog.

If you're into Ryan Adams and vinyl, you are doing yourself an EXTREME disservice if you don't pick this up.

Where did you hear quite a bit of the new record?

I've only heard the first single, and a shitty live recording of "Stay With Me", which I certainly won't take any judgment from

I was being serious. I love 'This Is It' - especially the music. DAWTMH is terrific as well. While I love the lyrics of 'Fix It', what gets me is the rhythm guitar because it makes the whole song.

I hope to see him live one day and continue to hope for great music. One of favorite artists has hits and misses (some very bad misses in fact!) but I enjoy most of his stuff even if others don't.

I think 'Hits and Misses' would be a good name of a greatest hits album

I'm in sort of the same boat, I suppose. I have the single. I'm pretty "meh" about both the A and B sides. As for the rest, I'll post a link to a thread with several clips. To be fair and acknowledge your point, they're all live recordings, and as I said, I'll wait until I have the record spinning to make any final judgements. But just using just the single and these clips of these tunes as sort of a guide, I'm tempering my expectations a bit. That's all.

I've been to two solo shows and I don't know how many Cardinals shows, and i've never, ever disappointed. Go when you get a chance.

You must not like original songwriters.

I could name many. But I shouldn't have to. Go hang out in your own fricking thread if you don't like him.

I am into both, and I'll never forget the first time I played his music on vinyl. It's like he records his music strictly for the vinyl listener. I'm not a huge audiophile, but his records are the only ones I own where I can tell a huge difference in sound quality from the vinyl and the digital recording.

I could listen to Dear John on vinyl all day.
