The fun part would be to see who would WANT anyone from the Big Dumpster Fire not named OU or t.u. And even those two come with baggage (OU has Oklahoma State, t.u. has the LHN and maybe Tech as well).

Shew... A state school in the DC area with upwards of 40K enrollment vs. a commuter school with less than 25K sitting on the side of the Ohio River.

Why didn't the B1G snap UofL up real quick?

in terms of athletic programs, there is no comparison. Maryland is in shambles.

Maryland got their asses beat in that settlement.

A&M and Mizzou paid $12 million each

Nebraska paid $9 million

Colorado paid $6 million.

The ACC was holding the cash, which made it a lot easier. Maryland could have won had it gone to court, as penalty fees for terminating a contract are largely unenforceable. However, they'd rack up a huge legal bill and they'd STILL have to spend more money in order to enforce the judgment and get the ACC to deliver the money. Heck, they might have had to file a NEW action to get the money. They were looking at huge out of pocket costs, and with a low chance of recovery of their money any time in the next decade.

Walking away was the right call. Saves them the legal bill and year and years of court time in order to get their money back. Just walk away from it. And next time, leave a conference AFTER you cash the check.

Fine with me. I'll take Louisville and $31M for Maryland any day.

I'm going to miss playing them in CBB, but they didn't bring much at all to the ACC besides soccer and lacrosse, and the ACC is stacked in both sports.

I don't have a dog in the fight, but I think the whole thing sucks. Maryland had a lot of history w/ the ACC (they were a founding member of the conference). They had some nice regional rivalries w/ Virginia (esp football) and Duke (esp basketball).

IMO the alumni should have kicked out the AD and/or President for pulling this sh*t.

It was all about money for Maryland. Their athletic department was in terrible financial shape, and they were having to cut non-revenue sports. They went after the Big Ten money at the expense of tradition and rivalries.

Pitt & Syracuse paid $7.5 million

West Virginia paid $21 million

TCU paid $5 million

Rutgers $11.5 million

UL paid $11 million* (will be less since Rutgers will not be a Big East member in 2015)

Does UL get a share of Marylands's buyout?

In terms of across the board funding&revenue Maryland isn't even close to Louisville. UL athletic department is probably larger with regards to budgets than anyone in the ACC.

and guess what? that doesnt change that OU and Texas are the only two desirable schools for expansion. Maaaaybe Kansas can be added to that list as a distant 3rd since they are AAU and have great basketball but thats it.
