AS Roma will start the season with a lot higher expectations than last after staying right on Juventus' heels for the Scudetto, finishing with a point total that would have seen them win it in any but two seasons in the entire history of Serie A.

The Scudetto race projects to be bit more open this year. It would surprise to see Juve replicate their record setting season, especially after losing Conte. However, expect increased competition at the top of the table. Napoli should be just as good as last year, Fiorentina is unlikely be as decimated by injuries and it was only a matter of time before Mazzarri had Inter (who will doubtlessly benefit from the "no Champions League points bump" as well) back in the race.

Champions League is a different story. AS Roma, unfortunately, is a group of death generator since they will likely be in the 4th pod.

While certainly having the top end quality to potentially get through any group, most level headed fans aren't thinking this team is deep enough for a serious run without a very unlikely, very favorable draw (especially without Strootman). This season it's probably better to simply go into the CL guns-a-blazin' regardless of the competition but, above all, focus squarely on the Scudetto and getting back to the CL next year with an ever improving squad.

The roster so far:

------------------------De Sanctis ------------------------
------------------------ (Skorupski) ------------------------

--------------- Benatia -------- Castan ---------------
---------------(Astori, Romangoli, ?) ---------------

Maicon --------------------------------------------- Cole
(Torosidis) ------------------------------ (Emanuelson, Balzaretti)

------------------------ De Rossi -------------------------------
------------- Pjanic ------------- Naingollan / Strootman -------
---------------- (Keita, Ucan, Parades) ---------------

Iturbe --------------- Totti --------------- Gervinho
----------- (Ljalic, Destro, Florenzi, Sanabria)-----------

Needed/likely moves to come:

1. 4th choice depth/rotational CB so Romagnoli can be loaned
2. The attack is pretty good and decently deep but every sign points to Sabatini/Garcia still keen to add one more elite difference making, creative player in the front three and possibly a depth/experienced center forward who fits better than Borriello who'll likely be loaned again.

Possible moves before the mercato ends:

1. Sanabria and/or Parades on loan for the season. Both figure large in future plans and may stay since the roster isn't very deep depending but may also get one more year on loan to another Serie A side. A Romangoli loan spell is also possible. He's already good enough to be the 4th CB in the rotation but more pt would be better when another CB is added. Seems Ucan has already shown more than enough to be in the midfield rotation.

2. The major shakeup possibility:

Benatia is sold:
Just because he's agreed to a raise doesn't mean Sabatini wouldn't move him in a flash for the right price. If he does, Roma will go after 2 CBs along lines of Manolas, Basa, Chiriches instead of just one CB but will also likely up the € ante significantly in his attempt to bring another big time attacking talent.

There's a pretty good chance Ljalic is sold regardless and even Destro isn't untouchable if it brings in a player Sabatini/Garcia covets. The deal for Konoplyanka seems unlikely but that the negotiations have been this advanced suggests that Sabatini is set on bringing on a similar caliber player and Ljalic would be the most likely odd man out if that happens.

I followed them very casually when Bradley was there, and I watched some highlights when Spurs got Lamela (who will be great this year), so I favor them more than any other Serie A team.

They also have sweet kits.

I like the looks of Ucan. Interested to see how Strootman recovers.

Will definitely watch more Serie A. Last year the only games I seemed to catch were Sassulo.

Should really be a fantastic atmosphere. I'll be back in Rome around that time but unfortunately not in time for this match.

Sabatini has been after Ucan for a while. After he really didn't get much time at Fenerbache I was thinking he may be loaned but he's looked more "ready" than I expected.

The league in general has become a lot more open the past couple of seasons, particularly due to some of the mid table sides playing a more aggressive style. Some really entertaining matches from a neutral standpoint.

Will be in Florence that day so we are taking a train in. Also bringing the wife since it's our honeymoon. I don't see many women in the stands. Am I asking for rape?

This may be only the board where you don't get 100 posts asking for pics following that question.

Seriously, there are really a lot of girls, women with their kids etc who go to matches. That some Italian guys will flirt with women well beyond what's considered acceptable or even civilized in the US is going to happen everywhere anyway but no worse going to a football match.

In general, the environment isn't nearly as rough as lot of people imagine from seeing the news about fights between Ultras' groups. Just like if you were leaving a game between LSU and Alabama and avoid the few groups of drunk troublemakers it's pretty calm.

What won't be calm is simply the chaos of getting the underground + tram or bus from Termini to the stadium. Leave yourself extra time.

Uncan looks great

how long till stootman is fit?

I hope itrube benefits greatly from the totti effect. How big of a coup was that and how highly is he rated in Italy.

bein carries serie a right? I think I'm going to add that package

also I know they loaned jedvaj but do they have plans of keeping him? How good is he now?

I'd heard the rave reviews about his skills but he's been better than I had expected right away.

It was a pretty big coupe as he was probably the highest rated young player in terms of potential in the league after Pogba, and even more so considering since Juve had prioritized signing him. He's really young and far from the finished product but his dribbling in tight spaces is elite and then some and a bit extra, he has blistering pace and he's excellent pressuring/winning the ball defensively. You never know at what pace prodigies will progress but he may well end up being better than Lavezzi or Di Maria in the near future.

Reports are that he's doing fine and even a bit ahead of schedule but only time will tell. I'd still not expect him to be back until October at best. Strootman, like Pjanic, continually comments on loving the idea of being a main cog around which a serious contender is being constructed. However, if he returns to last season's form, it may be hard to turn down some of the staggering bids which will start to come in.

.

Yeah, BeIN aired about 85% of all Roma matches of the entire season last year though many are with a delayed broadcast. The other 15% were on BeIN Espanol which came in my package but maybe that's just due to being in NY market.

I've grown to really enjoy some of their quirky soccer related shows like the Locker Room as well.

He didn't really play enough to know and the only real news was that he was in Rudi Garcia's doghouse for his work ethic.

Romagnoli clearly beat him out for PT and Roma also owns Luca Antei who was very good on loan to Sassuolo last season and a fixture on the Italy U-21 team.

Jedvaj was loaned to Bayer Leverkusen for next season. Since Rudi Völler, who's an ex-Roma legend that's always kept close to ties to the club, is Sporting Director there I would guess there's probably an unpublicized option to buy for Leverkussen.

I know Sabatini has been high on Balanta for a while and I'd love to have him if Benatia ends up being sold.

Otherwise, that we just signed Davide Astori may mean it's hard to get Balanta to come on as well.

Lazio is also pushing hard for Balanta as they can offer a clear starting spot.

I'm all aboard the Roma train this year, if you allow me on it! I'd watched most games last year and really enjoy watching them, and have been impressed by their signings, mostly due to Salih Ucan's hair. I hope to watch them, along with the rest of Serie A, even more this season.

Why do you have Pjanic on the left of the midfield and Strootman on the right? Just curious because, correct me if I'm wrong, but Pjanic almost always plays on the right side of the midfield, right?

Yeah, you're right about Pjanic being more on the right side. I started with the formation upside down and didn't change it when I flipped it.

It'll be great to have people who posts regularly in the thread! Seems most of the people that follow Roma the past few seasons are only occasional posters on the board.

Ucan's haircut was an absolutely crucial signing in replacing Dodo's.

I think we have a very strong side but could still use one more difference making player in the attack that may come by moving Ljalic.

The Scudetto is really there for the taking but we're more susceptible to a couple of key injuries setting us back with Strootman likely out for much of the CL.

Paredes and Sanabria look like future players but I'm not sure they won't ultimately be loaned to places they can play every day. I'd love to see as many of our attacking as possible go to Cagliari and develop under Zeman for a season. He's really a wizard at seeing younger players blossom.
