New York Times: NCAA may let top conferences play by their own rules

The universities with the country’s most prominent athletics programs are expected to gain preliminary approval Thursday to break away from some of the strictures of the N.C.A.A., a significant change that would give them more freedom to govern themselves and could allow athletes to share in the wealth of college sports.
Under the proposal, the N.C.A.A. would clear the way for sports powerhouses like Alabama and Ohio State to pay their athletes a few thousand dollars more than what the current scholarship rules allow, loosen restrictions against agents and advisers, and revamp recruiting rules to ease contact with top prospects.
quote:
The new rules would further widen the gulf between the 65 universities in the wealthiest conferences — the Southeastern Conference, the Atlantic Coast Conference, the Pac-12, the Big Ten and the Big 12 — and other universities across the country that have less money for their sports programs and would still be governed by N.C.A.A. rules.
The new model would codify the college sports world as one “much more, perhaps, of haves and have-nots,” said Peg Bradley-Doppes, the vice chancellor for athletics at the University of Denver, which is not in a Big 5 conference. “It may make the competitive experience more challenging.”
The measure stops short of allowing colleges to pay athletes lucrative salaries. But the new rules would effectively acknowledge that big-time college sports have long ceased to be purely amateur exercises, and that many of the restrictions that prevented universities from providing resources to athletes were outdated.
Full story.
Anything that lessens the involvement of the NCAA is probably for the best.

Big Conferences: you have no authority to discipline us any more
NCAA: OK, but can we tell everyone it was our idea to let you go on your own?

This is what will happen
It says that it will prohibit the conferences from paying players but that won't last, how the hell will the NCAA enforce it?

Good this is one more step in the right direction. Let schools pay the kids salaries if they have to, it will stop most of the under the table deals. The only thing the NCAA should be doing is making sure the kids are legitimate students and are finishing 24 hours a year.

this is why BAMA said "we will punish ourselves" for the Fluker and Luther Davis issues and the NCAA didnt do a damn thing about it.
LINK
This is why the rumors of an Ole Piss Bagman seem credible because why wouldnt Ole Piss have a bagman? They have nothing to lose

What the...!
Nice fricking timing. So some wannabe agent gives Reggie Bush's parents money and the NCAA and the rest of college football want SC to burn, and now that USC is getting off restrictions the NCAA says it will be okay to pay players and loosen agent rules? frick YOU, NCAA!

loosen restrictions against agents and advisers,
I dont understand why its such a bad thing for a kid who is making a decision that could affect millions of dollars to have contact with someone that knows what the hell they are talking about.
Personally, the NCAA should have agents apply/screened to be able to provide information to kids so they know what they are getting in to. They can't all have Scott Boras/Jimmy Sexton. If you had some sort of vetting process, it would eliminate these kids getting taken advantage of by "whatever rapper decides he wants to start a sports agent firm of the week" who's "agents" dont know shite about the business.

Substitue one crony process (rapper agents) with another crony process (NCAA approving agents).

They do have someone to talk to. The NFL has a draft projection process that tells players where they may get drafted. I don't know the whole process, but either the player or school requests for an evaluation, and the NFL tells them where they grade out.

The NFL screens/approves agents. The problem is, agents are telling these kids "look, I know the NFL graded you out as a 3rd round prospect, but if you sign with me, I can put you on a program that will elevate you into the first round based on the combine. But you have to hurry up and sign with me so that we can get you on the program right away."

Bring in agents, in any capacity, and they will soon be running college football. Agents will be telling their clients how hard/soft to play to avoid injury, guaranteeing them a high draft position in return. This is already happening but when it's made legit, expect the worse. A client is riding the bench & his agent tells him he needs to transfer to a school where he can get playing time. Agents will be funneling in even more money than mite be allowed under any new guidelines. Pro players have proven they cann't handle their money, so what do you expect from a college kid, even if it is not millions involved. A bad can of worms.

I was actually about to start a thread on this today. What's the argument against the big boys taking their ball and going elsewhere?
I guess this is their way to prevent that
