How often should you replace your A/C filter?

I check mine about every month. I live in an old, drafty house and it gets dirty quickly.

I do mine monthly only because we have an indoor dog. I also have the actual unit checked / serviced twice a year. Paid an additional $250 for the 10 year service plan when I purchased the HVAC unit.

With the seasons... every 3 months.

On a side note, I've heard that if you get those really efficient 1900 and above filtrete filters, unless your A/C is very new, you are making the unit work much harder to pull air through because they weren't designed for those type filters (or something like that). Any truth to this?

I use the pleated kind and they get dirty pretty quickly. Have to change every eight weeks or so in summer when the a/c runs so much. In winter probably twice that long because of so much less run time of the fan.
