I have over the air TV and a roku for streaming.
Within the context of football season, is there a way to DVR items that play on watch espn?

If you have the eyeTV, nowhereman has a channel you can use to dvr. There is also another, much more difficult, method with the HDHomerun Prime. Other than that you can setup VLC to record from ESPN3 (avoiding the roku all together) but you need to have a really good computer and do a little setup.
ETA:
All of these methods need a computer with storage capacity for the actual video files.

You can watch the replay on the WatchESPN app later that evening or the next day or wait a week or two and find them on youtube.

??? The Prime doesn't do OTA, nor is it possible to connect a Roku to it. The Prime is for CableCard and Clear QAM.

Vulkano series DVR are one of a handful that should do what you want. Your Roku's output will be your limiting factor, though, and you will not be able to DVR via HDMI. unless you're using a first-generation Roku, you'll be limited to the good old RCA y/r/w.

Ah, I have the dual and thought you could get OTA as well on the prime.

I know I'm right about this one, however. LINK

But that's still using the Prime as the source, which isn't going to help the OP. Now, if you do want to use the Prime and other recent SD products as a source without a PC, they support DLNA, which is good for watching live TV on devices that support it. You need a PC for DVR purposes, though.

Yeah, other than the OTA/Prime thing, I said that in my first post.
