The U.S. House of Representatives Natural Resources Committee yesterday passed the Federal Duck Stamp Act of 2014, which would raise the price of a federal duck stamp to $25 and dedicate the increase to conservation easements with private landowners.

What a joke.

I can understand this if the private lands are the only possibility for creating/maintaining habitat (which seems to be the case in the breeding grounds). But if this extends to more WRP, etc., my question is why can't it be put to use to create more habitat on public lands that taxpayers can actually hunt?

Im ok with paying more but it should be split between public and private lands.

I don't either. Knee jerk gripes like "the rich get richer" are empty without more.

I'm not sure people understand what conservation easements are.

The purpose of conservation is to preserve, guard and protect the habitat. Public lands are already protected.

The private lands are the ones that are at risk of conversion to farming or having structures built on them, etc. These things are what would keep the birds from reproducing, resting, etc on that land.

They are trying to permanently allocate that extra $10 to conservation easements to keep from losing the private land that they have no control over.

There are also provisions to bring the price back down if the increase in per stamp pricing, decreases the overall collection, and an requirement to report annually on the expenditures , status of the wetland projects, acres that are purchased and cost of the acreage.

All in all, it sounds to me like a win for the ducks ETA: with accounting and reporting built in!

I agree in the breeding grounds, where it seems that the biggest threat is conversion of private land to farming. But if you look down here, I can surely name Maurepas Swamp as being a vast public land area that is "protected" but not a sanctuary for ducks anymore like it used to be because of vegetation taking over.

The landowner has the control over the PRIVATE LAND. That's the way it's supposed to be.

DU is joke. And the people that buy into their scam are either dumb or blind. Or both.

Ah. There it is. You seem dumb. Not because you hate DU. I have no problem with that. I just bet you are incapable of understanding many many things.
