Are musicians forced to give up their lives to drugs in order to become great?

I think about this every now and then. It seems like in order for MOST musicians to break into greatness they are required to fall off the deep end. Can anyone shed light on any great musicians that have not given into drugs to reach greatness?

Thoughts?

Drugs make everything better. It turns all your bad feelings into good feelings.

Rush

For real though most musicians will tell you that while drugs are great and amazing and certainly provide a background and experiences for lyrics and experimenting, they always do their best work sober.

Although Mick Jagger, Robert Plant and John Lennon did drugs. They didn't "fall off the deep end".

I realize not every musician has/had a drug problem, but do you think they realize what they "have" to put themselves through to become famous?

There's actually quite a lot who didn't go off the deep end or that never did drugs at all.
