I'll wait of Wolfhound's opinion, but this seems like a good thing to me.

Good. But they really need to purge about 550 general officers.

Those officers are basically politicians playing soldier with fancy dress uniforms. It makes me sick. These are the same idiots that called the pos F-35 too big to fail.

If you're an officer working with a new weapons system, and that system/aircraft/tank isn't selected by that service, it can have serious consequences for your career.

But, yeah, we have more flag officers now than in WW2, when we had 15 MILLION men under arms. Damn right, we can afford to drop a few of them.

In 2007 and 2008 they gave each a ~ $15-30k bonus to stay on for 4 more years.

I'm not saying the F-35 is the best way to go, but you can't look at sunk costs when deciding the best way forward from a later snapshot in time.

That's been the problem with the F-35, after all this time and money it's cheaper for us to keep going rather than start over even though it will certainly continue to go massively over budget.

Yep. Makes me sick that we continue to weaken our military with politicans.

Which General Officers are you referring to? The ones who spent 80% of their careers as something other than GO/FOs? I'm all for trimming the fat and have never understood "military worship", but you have a fricking cheek implying that all or even a majority of Generals and Admirals are "playing" anything.

And they wear the same shite as the rest if us--just with more decorations.

ETA: Do you even know one?

Yeah, the drawdown of two major wars will do that. And the Army is set to lose the most. 550 MAJs isn't some huge deal. Though it is for them and their families. And no leader of a 3M man defense establishment would conduct his "purge" at the O-4 level.

Yeah, it isn't like they're Lt. Commanders or something.

As an O-4, these guys have been in about 12-20 years right? It would totally suck if you were sitting at 16 years (4 years from retirement) and got booted. I feel for the guys in this situation.

Two are virtually 100% politicians.

No question about that. I'm assuming they'll establish some sanctuary period outside the normal 18 year window and that severance will be provided for the rest, but it's a shite deal compared to retirement. We're "shaping" as well--though not to the degree of the army. When I was commissioned, big Navy was giving out 40-50K to retain 0-3s in my designator. We promoted at close to 80%. That's a memory now.

That wasn't addressed to you. But yeah, guys who are O-8 and above are typically concerned with policy, procurement, money, etc if they aren't in some position of strategic or operational command. Someone has to do it. The vast majority are working well below their market value (making $170-$250,000) in executive positions.

All part of the POS's strategy of diminishing the US on a worldwide level. We can take these salaries and give more phones away.
