The Obama administration lost a crucial legal battle on July 18 when a federal court ordered the White House to release previously withheld information on Operation Fast and Furious to the government watchdog group Judicial Watch.

According to a press released issued Thursday, the court case stems from a Freedom of Information Act lawsuit (that originally began as a FOIA request) filed by Judicial Watch in 2012 to obtain all documents that the president has withheld from Congress under claims of executive privilege.

The decision, issued by the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, would require the Department of Justice to turn over a “Vaughn Index” to Judicial Watch for the documents the group requested.

A Vaughn Index, according to the Office of Government Information Services, must: “1) identify each document withheld; (2) state the statutory exemption claimed; and (3) explain how disclosure would damage the interests protected by the claimed exemption.”

quote:

The judge also noted how unusual the circumstances were surrounding the White House’s refusal to even issue a Vaughn Index on the documents in question.

“To the extent DOJ argues that the mere production of the Vaughn index—not involving the release of any documents in dispute—would alter the historical balance of powers between the branches, any unbalancing would result from FOIA itself, a law passed by Congress and signed into law by the President, and which this Court cannot ignore forever,” Bates’ wrote.

I wonder how many recycled hard drives will be produced during this debacle.

They won't get the documents, just a vague description of what they are and why the privilege has been asserted.

Can you imagine what is in those docs though? At least the ones that haven't already been destroyed.

I saw that last night.

They will turn them over or the federal judge will slap someones azz in the pokey.

This administration will go down, it may be after they leave office, but I trust their crimes will eventually come out.

I wouldn't be surprised if Lois Lerner accidentally dies shortly.

I remember Obama running a campaign in 2008 promising the most transparent administration, ever.

It is a damn shame so many people bought into his bullshite. Obama is the epitome of why no one should ever trust a politician again, ever.

I'm sure Holder will get right on it.

Good for the judge, though.

"Our cover-up, um, investigation is ongoing and the policy of the DOJ is to conceal, um, not release information regarding ongoing investigations."

I wonder about anyone that made it to Obama to come to this conclusion.

Right. Isn't really a win other than slapping the admin's wrist and making them "follow the rules" while they cover things up.

Yea, but they have to list everything. Then if other documents are found or have already been provided and they aren't on the list then DOJ has a real problem...

hilarious, the millisecond I finished reading that subject my thought was "yea and Holders hard drive just had a fatal crash"..

I think we all know the scrub down of that episode has already been completed by this disgrace of an administration.

Not that there aren't some backup tapes somewhere that got missed, after all, govt operation.
