If you're the type that must prognosticate, look to the past to predict the future.

Compare 2014 to LSU's 2004 roster.
In 2004, the Defense boasted such names as:
Marcus Spears, Kyle Williams, Glenn Dorsey, Claude Wroten, Melvin Oliver. And that's just the D-line. The DB's were Laron Landry, Corey Webster, Travis Daniels, Craig Steltz
The names on offense match the impressive defensive list:
JaMarcus Russell, Dwayne Bowe, Jo Addai, Buster Davis, Andrew Whitworth, Nate Livings, Ben Wilkerson, Early Doucet, Lavelle Hawkins*, Skyler Green, Alley Broussard.

Time will tell if the players of 2014 prove to be more talented, but for now we can use the 2004 squad as an example to temper expectations. The 2004 squad was ranked #3 in the preseason polls, and many picked them to repeat as champions. Saban coached this immensely talented team to three losses, and came within an Alexis Serna extra point of losing 4.

A good, experienced QB can make a world of difference.

* On campus for about 4 days, but he's still listed on the roster so deal with it.

While I may or may not agree with what you're saying...

Lavelle Hawkins was on campus for about 4 days...I would remove him from your list.

This puts things in perspective and really shows that it's not just talent, but the need to get the right breaks and things to go your way throughout the season.

I guess your point is about experienced QB play. A 5th yer senior played the majority of snaps that year.

So we are going to lose more than 4?

The point is that immense talent across the board doesn't always translate to wins.

And Marcus Randle was not a very talented QB. Russell was very talented, but not experienced. Sometimes you need both.

If I were forced to make a bet, I'd place my bet on 3 losses.

And Saban had half a foot already out the door that year.

Meh, most of those guys were pretty young, and everyone looks better 10 yrs down the road, in 10 yrs ppl will be talking about Mett, ODB3 and Hill as possible GOATs

Or we could use the 2003 squad and preseason rankings to raise our expectations thought the roof

He had just finished working his arse off (as he always does) to pull in the #1 recruiting class. He went into the season looking to repeat. In week 1, he got out-played and out-coached by an overmatched Oregon State team. To suggest that LSU struggled that season because Saban "had one foot out the door" is just fooling themselves. LSU struggled that year and in 2002 because they didn't have a QB who could consistently pass the ball.

Ask Jamarcus if this is true. LSU fans quickly forgot just how good he was for us.

What would that preseason raking have been if Mauck hadn't gotten hurt in '02? I'm guessing top 3 with USC and OK.

A talented, experienced QB makes all the difference.
