Talk of USA breaking up becoming more mainstream? Noonan in the WSJ

Peggy Noonan pens a column today in the WSJ entitled "Out of Many, Two?". LINK
Ms. Noonan is not coming out in support of breaking up the USA but she does speak from experience about her concern about the state of politics today and leads with a paragraph about a conversation she had with "an acquaintance of considerable accomplishment in the political and financial worlds".
The discussion of the topic in such a large, respected publication by a very experienced, intelligent and respected columnist is really a pretty big deal.
These thinking people are looking at what is going on and would not be surprised at all if a break up occurred.

In theory it may be a workable idea, but I don't see how it would work in real life. Say you had the country split into a conservative America and a liberal America, most of the southern states would go to the conservative side. What happens to the pockets of blue in a red state, like Atlanta? Would those people either have to move or just be satisfied with being a minority in their new country?
What if Florida decided it wanted to join with the liberal America? You would have hundreds of miles of another country dividing it from the rest of its home nation.

I have a feeling that, the way things would work out, you'd have California lobbing rockets into Arizona for denying the "right of return" for any Hispanic who wants to be in Arizona.

Yep, it's pretty much a red state vs blue state divide. A geopolitical separation might be better than what we are seeing now with liberal progressives imposing their will on conservatives.

Why would the breakup be along state lines? If the nation breaks up along political boundaries, I don't think many of the states will survive without changes as well.

This is dumb. Is there not liberals in the South and Conservatives in the North? Splitting would solve nothing. Those countries would still have the same problems we face today and inevitably face their own split.
