Do either of these two teams have a chance to crash the party and sneak into the 4 team playoff? Iowa is my darkhorse to make it. They return a ton of starters and their schedule sets up perfect for them. I honestly feel like both teams could run their schedule. Obviously Marshall would need a lot of help, but its not impossible. Take a look at this years schedule:

Iowa Hawkeyes - (8-5 in 2013 with 15 starters back)

Northern Iowa - W
Ball St - W
Iowa St - W
@Pitt - W
@Purdue - W
Indiana - W
@Maryland - W
Northwestern - W
@Minnesota - W
@Illinois - W
Wisconsin - W
Nebraska - W

B1G Championship

Marshall Thundering Herd - (10-4 in 2013 with 14 starters back)

@Miami Oh - W
Rhode Island - W
Ohio - W
@Akron - W
@Old Dominion - W
Middle Tennesee - W
@FIU - W
FAU - W
@Southern Miss - W
Rice - W
@UAB - W
Western Kentucky - W

Lets assume Iowa loses in the B1G Championship game in a battle against a team like Ohio St or Michigan St, would their schedule keep them in the discussion?

I think VEGAS has Marshall having the best odds of going undefeated this year or something. They arent bad!

Neither

Marshall schedule is too weak

Iowa has mastered the art of losing to a team they shouldn't each year. Even if they run the table in the regular season I don't see them beating Ohio State or Michigan State or whoever in the B1G Champ Game

I agree with that to a degree. When Iowa is preseason ranked, this applies. However, this is one of those years where Ferentz will do his thing. They always come out of nowhere when nothing is expected from them. They have all of their peices back with a great schedule.

you can make a legit argument for Iowa. They are set up perfect! I think Iowa has no more then 2 losses this year.

Even if they go undefeated there is no way they will make the playoff

A big 10 team with 2 losses has no shot.

they must have knew they'd have a good group coming back when they made sure their nonconference was three doses of MACtion and Rhode Island...

If Marshall goes undefeated with that schedule, they still shouldnt crack the Top 10.

Going into the Rubber Bowl to face the Zips is going to be a serious dose of MACtion. Only the strong survive

If Iowa went 12-1 with that schedule they should deserve no more respect that an AAC team with an equal record. What a horrible schedule. The Big Ten West is like the old Big 12 North. It truly is an ideal schedule. They play 10 shitty teams in a row, which could have them at 10-0 ranked highly for no reason other than record, then they would get to validate their record to the voters with wins over Nebraska and Wisconsin (which look good, but are still only average teams). Ohio St or Michigan St beating them in the B10 championship game should put them at the bottom of the list for 1 loss teams though.

Yep, IMO if a mid major wants to be in the playoff discussion they need to schedule all 4 non conference games with the Big 5 conferences. I understand the argument that they can't control what conference they are in, but they do control who they play in those 4 games.

This is coming from an Iowa fan. We should be a decent to good team this year with a horrible schedule. Anything less than 9-3 would be a bad year with this schedule. Having said that, I think we finish 9-3 with losses to Pitt, Wisconsin and either Nebraska or NW.

The problem here is that the better mid major teams will have a hard time getting 4 games. They will get one or two but too many programs are afraid to schedule them so it would be tough to get 4, especially if that mid major is expected to be good.

Even worse will be finding Big 5 schools to come to your stadium. Do you think any Big 5 school wants any part of going to Boise State and playing on the blue turf? No FBS team is going to play 4 road games in non conference and have only 4 home games total for the season.
