Should Stephen Smith have been suspended by ESPN after Ray Rice comments?

Ray Rice apparently K/O'd his then fiancee (now wife) off-camera at a Casino ( LINK). He is pictured dragging her unconscious out of an elevator. Exact circumstances are elusive, but were presumably covered in private with authorities and with the NFL. Rice was subsequently suspended two games.
Smith's statement about the case:
“In Ray Rice’s case, he probably deserves more than a two-game suspension, which we both acknowledged,” he said, as Bayless nodded. “But at the same time, we also have to make sure that we learn as much as we can about elements of provocation. Not that there’s real provocation, but the elements of provocation”

ESPN has hit Stephen A. Smith where it hurts most -- his airtime.
The network announced on Tuesday that it was pulling the First Take talker for a week from his ESPN2 morning show and ESPN Radio. He will return to ESPN next Wednesday. Smith is likely to take a break from social media as part of the move.
Asked by Sports Illustrated if it was a paid or unpaid de-facto suspension, an ESPN spokesperson declined comment.
On Monday, in a taped statement read at the top of the show he co-debates with Skip Bayless, Smith offered an on-air apology for comments made on last Friday’s show. On that episode, in the midst of discussing the NFL’s adjudication of Ray Rice, Smith suggested that women should examine their role in provoking domestic violence incidents.

No, this is bullshite. Not like I care anything about SAS, I happened to be watching the show when he made the comments and didn't think it was a big deal at all until I heard all the backlash. I had to go and check to make sure I hadn't missed the real comments they caused the outrage.
He is on that show along with skip to give their entertaining opinions. I just don't get this at all and America is going to hell in a hand basket letting these PC nuts dictate everything.

ESPN is a pussy azz network.
Women want equal rights, so if she is on camera hitting him first WHY DONT these same women who are moaning demand she be charged by police also.
If you demand equal rights, then swing at a man, shouldn't you get what a mab swinging at a man gets?
Woman want double standards applyed towards them.

This whole saga gets a big "MEH" from me.
I got what he was trying to say and it wasn't bad at all, just poorly-bordering-stupidly phrased (which happens sometimes when you're speaking off-the-cuff). If it were solely my call I wouldn't have done anything. I think it's stupid that anyone cares, honestly. That more people seem outraged about Smith's poorly-phrased commentary on Ray Rice's domestic violence against his wife than about the NFL openly not giving a shite about it is a terrible statement on our society.
On the other hand, in a market as voluntary as sports media, you get exactly what your actions indicate you want. No one needs to watch ESPN. A lot of people don't and are no worse off for lacking it. If this move brings in more viewers than they'd get with no action, I can't fault ESPN for doing it; they're just servicing ample demand for outrage.
It's the same as with clickbait sites like BuzzFeed or UpWorthy: I do my part in making them go away by not going to their websites, but I can't blame them for making big money off of idiots.
So... I view it as their right to do it. They're servicing a market and they own the means by which Smith is able to broadcast his opinion, so they have every right to take it away if they deem it necessary or best. But I don't view it as a free speech issue.

I think the networks have gone too out of fear of even the appearance of "not caring" about an issue. Smith said something stupid (it was dumb), but he didn't really "blame the victim". He straight up apologized for it.
