i own a few 9mm handguns, glock 19, ppq, and 92fs. I've recently been eyeing some 1911s and especially a kimber custom 2.

how does the board feel about the kimber line as opposed to a springfield or something else in the 800-1k price range, and if i get the 1911, would it be sacrilege to get a 9mm version? I don't mind the heavier recoil of the 45acp, but this will be purely a range gun and 9mm is much cheaper. the other alternative is a cz75 9mm, but i just love the aesthetics of the kimber.

thanks in advance

I have a Kimber Raptor II and I absolutely love it. I think Kimbers are awesome, but I'm no expert on them.

I have a beautiful CZ 75 and love it

I prefer Springfield over kimber

I think the kimber uses more MIM parts inside that the colt and Springfield

A-1 loaded is a fine weapon

So do I but ill say that a Kimber is a nice pistol and you get a lot more bling for your money.

OP: buying a Kimber at the 800-1000 dollar price range is not a mistake. The Kimber guns in this price range definitely have more bells and whistles than the springfields of comparable price. There are several models to choose from and I would just go with whatever feels and aesthetically pleases you from there.

As a USC fan posting on an LSU website I can not believe you give a shite what people think. That being said I think its just another gun that is fun to shoot and would be effective if you needed it. I really like the Tactical Pro in 9mm for what its worth but for that kind of money I would look at the trophy match or trp from springfield. Also if you own a couple 9mms I cannot justifiably tell you to pass over the .45 for another 9mm. Yeah its more expensive to shoot but it doesn't break the bank to put a few hundred rounds down range a couple times a month. How much do you honestly see yourself shooting that particular gun?? just food for thought

a legit concern i have is that the 1911 platform was built around the 45, so would a 9mm variant possibly be less reliable?

Meh. In theory maybe but these guns aren't setup the same as a 45. Lighter recoil springs smaller chambers etc. A company like Kimber isn't going to release a gun that doesn't work most of the time. Relative reliability is overplayed especially when talking about a range gun. You can take a bottom of the barrel Taurus to a range and might see 100 percent reliability for several hundred rounds. With lesser quality parts and less craftsmanship they are just more likely to fail over time or the company ship a gun that shouldn't have left the factory. I don't care what brand or platform gun it is I don't think of it as a means of protection until it sees 500-1000 rounds without a hiccup anyways.

Yes and all MIM parts are not created equally. Now obviously Kimber makes some guns better than some of the guns Springfield makes but imho opinion the top third of their product lines is won by Springfield. If you disagree you aren't alone. KR will be on here prolly 7-8 am to defend his kimbers

It is my understanding that all frames come from brazil dating back to the inception of the company in the 70s. If youre talking about something before then not only is it not a relevant comparison but it was a different company altogether.

Forgings come from Brazil and are used to finish the nicest models, while other models are made entirely in Brazil.
Its relevant to any conversation if you are to compare an American made firearm to something that is not.

Well in that case I also have an American made Springfield. I thought you were saying you have one that is completely American made, which if you include the frame none are. So yes it is relevant and American made, not including the frame forgings.

Colt is American made of forged components with almost no MIM.

I have two kimbers, a pro tle 2 and a goldmatch 2. Ive had problems with both. The goldmatch would fail to feed on just about every magazine. Then I got some mccormick mags, and it hasnt jammed since. The tle has ejection problems. The ejection is erratic, and every so often a shell will come back straight into my face. I always wear glasses shooting thankfully, bc ive had a couple shells nail my lens. Would have fricked my eye up if i hadnt had glasses on.

If you go looking at kimber reviews online, you can find a lot of similar problems with kimber. I know every single kimber doesnt have problems, but i dont think i would buy another one. That being said, i havent gotten rid of mine.

True. Only 3 in a gold cup which is just north of a thousand. Good production 1911. Firing pin block and loose slide to frame drove me away. Just not my style.

I don't think so. I want a 1911 in 9mm just haven't picked one up yet they are sweet shooting guns, but the 9mm has to wait till I get a 10mm.
