Which team in your opinion had the better defense 2003 or 2011?

03 but 06 was damn good too.

I'd be cool with either one.

There was just something special about that '11 defense

2003 defense was more consistent.
2011 defense was more dynamic.

That 11 defense had an excitement and wow factor to it. Every play something could've happened that just made you get up and want to yell in excitement, having Mathiue made it even better.

2003 was disciplined, solid, and probably more difficult to move the ball against.
2011 had more playmakers and could take the game over by themselves.

2003: 154 points against in 14 games. 11 PPG. Never allowed over 24 points in any game and that was a 55-24 crushing.
2011: 158 points against in 14 games. 11.3 PPG. Never allowed over 27 points in any game and that was a 40-27 crushing.
Based on BCSCG, I have to go with 2003.

Were the offenses LSU played against better in '03 or '11? That will say a lot about the ppg allowed.

Tougher schedule in 2011, potent ooc offensive teams in Oregon and wvu. Ou scored 2 tds in one game, bama scored 1 in 2 games. I'm going 2011. And let's not act like bama had a puss poor offense, they rolled every team they played as well.

My gut says 2011, but I didn't really have the understanding or context back in 2003 to really make a fair comparison.

Just think if the 2011 defense had a line backing corps worth a shite. Ryan Baker was OK, not elite. Kevin Minter was unnoticed until the next year. Stefon Francois converted from safety, shouldn't have needed to do that, but neither Lamin Barrow and Tahj Jones would step up enough to keep Francois off the field.
I'll take the completeness of the 2003 defense. People forget, or just don't talk much about the linebackers that year.
Cameron Vaughn was a beast as a true sophomore. Made big plays all season.
Lionel Turner had a great Junior season. Disappeared his senior year.
Eric Alexander was the most underrated player on that defense.
Adrian Mays (one of my favorite players that year) was converted from strong safety, added muscle weight but kept his speed. That was a kid that listened to Saban. I recall a play he made against UGA in the SECCG: UGA tried a trick play in the red zone, a toss back, thrown to the opposite side of the field. After that play I remember thinking that play would've worked against LSU every year. But Adrian Mays stayed with his man, didn't bite on the fake, and defended it perfectly. It summed up that whole entire defense. The 4th string LB comes in and the defense doesn't miss a beat. Knew his assignment and executed perfectly.

2011 outperformed every offense it faced - even in the BCSCG. Halfway through the fourth quarter, when defeat was assured, they quit. Until then they had gone eight quarters without allowing the national champions into the end zone! On top of that they were a turnover machine.
They did all of this with unbelievably crappy offense. All we had was a running game, but we had a very mediocre oline. That running game was actually powered by our defense which constantly got the ball back until the other team quit.
2011 is the best LSU defense I've ever seen, and I've been watching for half a century.

2011. Had the Honey Badger and Mo (no knock on 2003 db's)

I'd give anything for the LSU d to have the Mike Tyson knockout king reputation it had in 2006
"Dont go out there thinking youre gonna be able to sit back and feel these guys out. Theyre gonna come out and take your head off."
--Tommy Tuberville pregame locker room speech to his team. before the 2006 Auburn game. It Aired on CBS. I wish i could find it on youtube

I'd have to go with 11 defense. 03 had a better offense to work with. Both defenses were awesome to watch.
