When I drive around town, my brakes have started squeaking pretty bad. However, if I drive on the intestate for a while and then get back on surface streets, I have almost zero brake noise.

Any idea why this is? My truck is in the shop to have the brakes checked/replaced but it just seemed odd how they only squeak at certain times.

Age/mileage?

You sure it's a squeak and not a scratchy sound?

Yeah, it's definitely squeaky.

Could be as simple as some minor warping of the rotors.

Once they get hot (interstate driving) they quiet down.

That age and mileage, it's gonna have some oddball crap going on. I wouldn't dump a ton of money in it as long as it's stopping decent.

Any idea how much that could cost?

F150?

About 5 bills for front pads and rotors.

$500

IDK about Tacoma. Probably a bit more.

Your truck is worth putting money into. Tacomas are gold in tje use vehicle world.

I hope it's not that then

I was told it's probably just a simple brake job and would cost between $150-$180.

So no new rotors, then. Just pads, I guess.

Good luck.

They said they THINK that's what it is. I'll find out for sure in the morning. Thanks for your help!

I would say that when you are in town, you use the brakes and they get hot...on the interstate, you are moving faster and seldom using the brakes so they stay cooler.....

Regardless, the squeaking is almost always either caused by glazed over brake pads or pads that are used well past their life....

Does my price estimate sound realistic for this?

Your quote sounds realistic for glazed over brake pads, but if you ran the pads too long and screwed up the rotors, I would expect a bit more.....

Did you ever hear a very loud screeching noise that was always present or was it always just a squeal that only happened when you applied the brakes?

Any man who pays 500.00 for a brake job just needs to start wearing a dress and give blowjobs. Go buy a tool set , parts and do it yourself and you'll still come in under 500.00. That's just crazy to pay someone that much to change brake pads/shoes and rotors.

Now I'll gladly take your 500.00 as I do everyday from many guys who are afraid of a little dirt and hard work but I'm trying to help you out. Man up.

Only a squeal when I'd brake. Really only when I was really slowing down, like at a stop light. Didn't hear anything if I just tap the brakes.

New pads and rotors cost about $100 for a parts house. It's only 4 bolts to light them on. You can do it. Watch some YouTube videos.

Doesn't sound like you ruined the rotors....if you wear brake pads completely out, it.will generally make a terrible screeching. Noise that you absolutely can't ignore....

Fwiw, may not amount to much, but there are almost always some charges associated with a brake job that run it up a bit over the quote....
