Is a small truck such as a Frontier or Dakota strong enough to pull an average size boat out if the water and up a ramp? If so, does it have to be 4WD?

I think you'd be surprised by some of the power on those little trucks

doesn't have to be 4wd, towing power is function of torque/gearing

Considering that a Nissan Frontier looks almost as big as my 1992 F150, I believe you.

Yeti sticker is the only thing keeping that car above water.

don't be surprised to smell a little clutch burning action as you wind it up to get the power to pull it out (depending on the landing quality).had a 4cyl. nissan hardbody that took everything it had to pull a (rather heavy) 14ft. alum. boat out,but it got the job done.

And traction on the ramp of course. With a 4wd t-case you normally get a lower gear range as well.

Why not look at the rated towing capacity of the truck and compare it to the weight of the boat?

I used to put a buddy's 17' Glastron ski boat w/115hp Ev. in//out of the basin with an '82 Camaro, no problem, a few years later I bought a 28' pontoon boat w/90hp Yamaha and had a '93 F-150 with the small block V-8, that boat would eat that truck's lunch

I pull a 22 ft aluminum center console with a 150 on the back all over LA with a 2wd 4 runner. Have backed down plenty of wet and steep ramps with no problem (yet).

Depends on grade of the launch and condition
