No problem at all for an average boat.

I have a 16' Skiff that I pull all the time. I had a Dakota v6, 2wd and recently traded for a Tacoma v6, 4x4. You don't even know that a boat is back here and never a problem on the ramp with either truck.

Why not look at the rated towing capacity of the truck and compare it to the weight of the boat?

Thats too easy.

Plus it doesn't take into account ramp angle. Wet surface. Extra resistance of pulling something through water.

It's not so much pulling the boat as it is stopping the boat. A small truck can pull, however the chassis may struggle to keep the weight under control and the brakes may not be sufficient.
I've seen people pulling out boats here with compact FWD suv's, just because it can doesn't mean I'd recommend it.

The other thing that needs to be considered is frequency of pulling boat and braking (stopping load) while traveling. That's how shite gets jack knifed

Just wait for the Nissan and Chevy/GMC to put diesels in their small trucks... 2015 models I believe will have this

Pull yes, stopping is a different story. People out too much emphasis on can my truck pull this and overlook the other equally important question can my truck stop this.

with the Tacoma 2x4s you can lock the rear differential and better better torque to the ground when pulling.

Just look at the towing rating.

They all have the power to pull 20k pounds. Stopping it and holding up the tongue are two entirely different and more important monsters.

Make sure you get something with at least a limited slip rear end.
