Is it worth it to get a metal roof as opposed to architectural shingles?

Metal isn't the easy answer to roofing problems many people think it is...

It's a lot more expensive.

Perhaps not, but I am thinking that if hail storms come more often in the future then by the time I pay a couple of deductibles then I could have bought a metal roof. Are metal roofs not hail resistant?
I figure a hurricane has a good chance to screw up either type of roof.

Also, your cell phone will not work most times due to the metal. Know some people that have the metal roofs.

I just had a new arch shingle roof put on. Before that, i was looking into a metal roof and 1.) they are waaay more expensive 2.) you have to replace the sheet metal screws like every 8 years or something because the rubber seal around the head of the screw dry rots. 3.) also when i asked my roofer about putting one on he said "If i thought a metal roof was better than an architectural shingle roof, i'd have metal on my house." That was enough for me.

Yep, and you need to go to the larger screw size to get this done. Well the screws only go so big, then you are shite out of luck...

Metal sucks.

Standing seam might be OK, but nothing beats a good, well-installed shingle roof.

Standing seam is even more costly that R panel, more labor intensive

As wick said, screws wiil have to be replaced, I've done it. Never again

Typically metal is double the cost of a shingle roof

A well installed, quality laminate shingle will hold well to everything but hail and tree impact...

Yeah $1200/square plus copper on everything.
Insanely expensive but gorgeous and will last longer than most of us.
Slate jobs are my favorite, love seeing the finished product. Doing one in Tchefuncte country club now

Replaced a slate roof last year in NOLA on St. Charles- the roof was 70 years old

So it lasts 3x as long as a shingle roof at 4x the cost.

Hmm... Let me cipher on that a minute.

All said and done I would say a slate roof costs closer to 5x-6x

With slate you want to use copper drip edge, copper valleys, copper flashing. Reason being: you don't want to be getting up there in 20-25 years changing out all of your metal and adjoining slates.
