Darren Sproles is a very unique player with a rare skill set. Replacing him in the offense isn't really a true possibility with the players we have. BUT, I do not believe that it will be a problem for our beloved Saints. And here's why:

When you look at the touches that Sproles was given throughout the game, they were mostly plays designed to maximize Sproles' particular skills, to get him the ball in space with a one on one opportunity with either a safety or linebacker. Before Sproles we had Reggie Bush who was our receiving threat out of the backfield. When he was on the team Sean Payton and Co. designed plays that allowed Bush to maximize his skills. Although, i don't believe they ever truely figured out what role he should play because every year he seemed to have a different set of plays designed for him. as the year went on he became much more of a receiver than a RB. I chalk that up to a first time head coach learning on the job. But i digress.

Lets look at another position, TE. During the Jimmy Graham contract dispute, the talking heads were saying how our offense depends heavily on him now and would struggle without him. And yes i agree that Drew Brees makes a conscious effort to get the ball in Jimmy's hands, BUT we didn't need Jimmy to win the superbowl. This is not a slight on Jimmy, I'm just saying that the team was successful on offense before we had him.

The point that I am trying to make is that Sean Payton adapts his offense to the skills of the players within it. Everyone keeps trying to figure out who is going to replace Sproles. Is it gonna be Cadet?Maybe Cooks? The answer is that no one will replace Sproles. Coach Payton is going to look at the pieces that he has on this offense and design plays and game plans that will maximize the skills of each individual player on the field.

God I can't wait for the season to start!

I know TL;DR

"When you look at the touches that Sproles" got it was just like he got in San Diego....our coaching staff didn't nothing different. Sproles is a unique talent

but he's been better utilized since he left, what's your reasoning as to why our coaching staff is not to blame?

He was utilized pretty damn effectively with the Saints when he could stay healthy.

He scored 38 touchdowns for the Saints the 66 games he played for us

He has scored 22 touchdowns in the 45 games he has played since leaving.

So he scored in 58% of the Saints games compared to 49% since, despite seeing way more touches per game.

why was he able to stay on the field more...after he left...and being used twice as much?

training and conditioning staff?
missing 20 games in 5 years, versus 3 over the last 3 years.

yoga? vegan diet? playing surface? has he ever commented on it?

3.7 rushing avg in NO as a semi-legit running back....4.6 with lower grade teams

Experience, growth, and durability helped, I'm sure.

Highly doubt it was team docs, training, and conditioning.
I mean, they did give the OK for Brees.

Moot point. Buffalo is a terrible team, but they're pretty effective in the run game.

has more to do with opportunities the offense provides the back more than the back himself. miami's offense had a hard time moving the ball, and Bush carried them

He learned how to hit the hole and take positive yardage rather than trying to break every run. I always thought he was pressing himself to make a big play every touch because he knew he wasn't getting a full workload. Now that he's the main guy, he can be patient and let things develop on their own. This is pure speculation and opinion of course.

He averaged 4.5 over his last 3 seasons here.

I said in the OP that they never figured out how to effectively use Bush. I blame it on the fact the it was Payton's first few years as a HC and as great as he is, everyone has a learning curve. I think he made mistakes with Reggie and he learned from them and does a better job fining the right roles for players.

maybe, but with that many more carries you would think he could find the endzone more

Why didn't his touchdowns go up in Detriot with more touches?

He got first downs for the saints over and over again. He scored touchdowns.

How can you say we didn't use him right when he:

1) Scored 38 touchdows for us

2) Helped us win a Super Bowl

3) Had 244 first downs for the Saints
