looking to buy a new outdoor tv...question about weather protection

Do I need to worry about a cover? I had thought about buying a grill cover to go over, but would that just create more moisture build up? Here is my setup currently. I'm looking to go to a 60-65".
Also, what kind of tv would you recommend?

Just buy a throw away set and when it fails, buy a new one.

or you could not lock down the mount and just put it up each time you use it and then store it somewhere where its more protected

Most people will say this, you can buy at least 2-3 regulars by the time you pay for an outdoor tv. I have a buddy that got a cover for his from tvcoverstore.com, I think. But at the same time, my uncle has the same tv he has outside with no cover about a year longer and has had no issues yet.

That's what I currently do with a 32",it's a pain every time. I just want to be able to sit down and turn it on

Sunbrite is the best outdoor tv on the market, but you're going to pay about 3-4x over a standard set, or more for cheap sets. I have friends that have gotten 5+ years out of LCD(not LED) sets as long as they are not directly exposed to the elements. Also need to make sure direct glare isn't a problem. Go to thecoverstore.com for a cover. Don't get a plasma.

I've had a Samsung LCD outside for about 5 years now. As long as it's protected from direct rain I wouldn't worry about it too much. Yes, humidity will ultimately be it's demise, but so be it. Like said before, they're so cheap just go get a new one...

I would say yes. Unless you change the way it is mounted(maybe put it higher and closer to the roof), the sun will fade it over time. Rain will get to it too with it being mounted that low.
Another question is if you put a 60-65 inch TV, will someone steal it? I have a 50" outdoor and it was like $500.
ETA: when you get over 55 inches for a TV, the pixels get kinda blurry(especially for sporting events). You may need an HD digital box for it as well

Im about to put a TV outside under a new covered area….I'm going to find the cheapest new 55 or 60" TV I can find and ride it till it dies. if you get 2-3 years out of it ok. if it lasts longer, even better. in the winter when we have freezes I'll wrap it in something.

That's an exposed location. I'd be more worried about driving rain than condensation. Get a cover.

That was my thought. Would you leave the cover on all the time or just put it on when it is going to rain?

I would only take it off when I was going to use the set.

I'm about to add a TV to a new covered patio outside, as well. The patio is screened in and attached to the back of the house. The West wall is 14 ft and is solid. That's where the TV will go above the fireplace. The South and East sides are screened in.
I don't plan on buying an outdoor TV.
I didn't think about covering it when it's cold. I'll need to do that?
Unless there's a lot of wind blowing from the South, I don't think it's going to get wet from rain.

Covering it when it is cold isn't going to do anything. Just don't turn it on if the ambient temperature is outside of the operating range for the set.

y'all know my setup ad nauseum on here
i just cant imagine leaving a tv out year round. i have a great setup but i've only brought the tv out maybe a dozen times this summer and i'll pretty much have it outside every saturday in the fall.

I'm not going to haul a big tv out and hang it over a fireplace when I want to watch it. I'm willing to take my chances leaving it outside. I didn't know there was an ambient temp range for TVs outside. I'll have to read about that. With a fireplace outside, I have no problem being out in the cold watching TV and grilling etc... I love being on a patio on a cold and rainy day. I got blankets, heaters and a fireplace.

All TVs have a listed operating range for temperature. It should be in the specs for the set.

Many thanks. Learned something new. Never had to read the specs about temps for the TVs in the house.

i have a 50" LED and its light enough to bring in and out easily. because of the ingenius 'shower curtain hanger' IKEA mount, it takes probably 1-2 minutes MAX to unplug it upstairs, remove the stand..walk downstairs and hang it up outside.
two things that make this solution really easy:
1. the little gray IKEA mounts look like little spools of thread and are screwed in permanently whether the tv is upstairs or outside.
2. i have a chromecast plugged into the back of the tv like a usb stick so i don't have to worry about anything but power when i bring the tv outside and use my phone to control it.
i know everyone's setup is different but this way i never have to worry about the wear & tear on the tv or weatherproofing it and while i didn't want a tv in my bedroom, its kinda nice having it in there..if for no other reason than listening to music.
