Looked at a 2002 F250 this weekend that is in good shape overall, but the clearcoat is flaking off the paint and it is scratched in several areas. Obviously the only way to get it looking new again is to repaint/clear it. Has anyone gotten something like this done recently? If so, how much did it run you?

Or...does anyone here paint cars on the side perhaps?

Prepare your anus. They are charging an arm and a leg these days to paint trucks. The only way to get it looking new involves lots of sanding and body work before it can even be painted. If you are just looking for new and shiney finish then I would just honestley take it to a fact-o-bake type place.

Clearcoat on my truck is peeling pretty badly and a family friend quoted me at atleast 2K but likely much more. That's a family friend for 99 GMC Sierra for painting single stage paint and clear coat.

Hate to tell you this, but i'd steer clear of that alltogether. Paint is expensive itself but the labor is just as expensive. Save the 4-5K and just add that to another truck with good paint.

Thanks guys.

I walked away from the truck but it's still in the back of my head. It's listed for 12k which is around 6k less than the others of that year model/mileage but it needs at-least 5k worth of work. Not sure I am willing to spend that on a 12 year old truck.

And there is a reason for that...You're doing the right thing. Find a cleaner truck for a little more money and it will pay dividends with the extra years it gives you as opposed to the one you're looking at.

I called last week about it. Evidently the paint costs have gone through the roof. Guy told me that a gallon of quality clear coat now costs him $200, and regular paint is like $150/gal

To paint a 2500 GMC would've been $4500 at this place in Metairie, and cavins said a fresh paint job would start at $5k

Eta: That was for painting it the same color and at high quality paint places. You might be able to get cheaper, but the paint job will look like shite

You're looking at probably $3K or more in just paint work, not to mention little dents and whatnot they may have that need bodywork before the paint adding another grand or more. Don't be surprised if it's around $5K for a truck that size.

Paint should be an afterthought here. That 7.3L motor is a gem.

As others have said, you're looking at around 5k to paint a truck that size. Add more for the two tone. Add more for dents and scratches. Walk away unless you're just looking for a farm or work truck.

I have a coach That I've completely painted his truck. We did it in pieces when he saved up money. Fenders and hood in one shot. Doors in another, bedsides, etc. it cost him way more than a compete would have cost because he lost some of the overlap when panel painting, but it's what he could afford to do. It's always an option.

That's actually cheap for paint and clear.
That truck is Ford Toreador red. The gallon of basecoat is easily $600+.
Good clear will run you close to $300 for a gallon setup.
Add in a sealer that they SHOULD use, and you're looking at $1000 in paint and supplies (sandpaper, tape, disposal fees, etc)
Pay a man to sand it, do bodywork, tape it, and paint it - anyone decent is going to want $2,000 labor for the 2-3 days worth of work.
When dealing w painting cars, you definitely get what you pay for.
ETA: that's a huge vehicle. You'd better count on 1.5 gallons of paint and 2 gallons of clear - double your materials bill
