A questioned I have pondered in the early stages of thinking about different political philosophies on a deeper level.

Private paramilitary groups to meet demand of people seeking to defend property and the lives of friends and family.

Have an upvote.

Also, it's hard to invade any anarchist state because no one has built any roads.

I don't know, but Afghanistan seems to do it pretty well.

I'm not sure I believe these would exist, at least ones worth a shite, with just a few years of general peace

With a massive, almost unmatched (anywhere else in the world) terrain advantage. It is equaled in only a few other places.

Probably not the best example.

ETA: Such an arrangement is virtually impossible in a nuclear world, anyway.

Afghanistan isn't the type of anarchist state some on this board envision. Although that's what it would it would turn into.

Good question. Here's another: how does an anarchist state defend property rights?

There already are illegal paramilitary groups all over the world that are quite good at what they do. Now imagine them being funded by people defending their children, to say nothing of investment by trade partners all over the world with a vested interest in a free market.

Not really. They would all - to the very last man - be crushed in a day if a serious player had the will to do it. Israel could wipe Hezb'allah or Hamas off the map with the press of a button if they so wished. Iran could take wipe out ISIS in a few days if it really came to it. On and on.

You mean two forces funded, equipped, and (in some cases) even manned by powerful and heavily-armed state allies?

So they were united by foreign states? or aided? big difference.

What paramilitary group just took on a national force? ISIS

There's a good chance they'd be fighting alongside state armies that would have their best interest in defending them.

I'm not considering Afghanistan, but instead thinking of an anarcho-capitalist state that promotes freedom and peace.

If letting a foreign power roll through your country and destroy everything counts, then I suppose they do. If they had any natural resource worth taking, and we had the desire to take it, we would have no difficulty.

Like communism, it looks great on paper, but a terrible idea in reality.
