Anywhere in New Orleans or BR I can get New Mexican Green Chilies?

Looking for fresh green chilies in either one of these two cities. Looking to fire roast them. Any suggestions?

Rouses has gotten the Hatch chiles every year the past 2-3 years, when they come in season. I don't recall when that is, but check there.

Call Southside Produce.

Whole Foods goes crazy when the Hatch chilies come in. Like they do a festival and have all sorts of products -- cheese spreads, sauces, etc. If it isn't going on already, it has to be pretty soon.

The hatch green chilies are exactly what I'm looking for...any idea on their spice level. I know they can vary from medium to hotter than a jalapeño. My friend would bring back some super spicy ones from Albuquerque

We seldom see Hatch/NM Chiles here in Central FL. When we do its typically around early September. I typically substitute Poblanos instead when they arent available.

Fresh Hatch Chiles won't be available for another month or so. Standard ones are spicy similar to jalapeno but the burns seems to not stick to your palette as long as some other peppers. And the flavor is much better IMO than jalapenos. They do have medium and mild versions but I find these to be wildly inconsistent in spiciness. Some are mild but others are very spicy. I always buy 10 lbs or so and roast them on my grill and freeze to use throughout the year. I've bought the pre roasted versions but I don't like the way they roast them. If you roast them even a couple of minutes too long, the fleshy innards dry out to nothing. I make new mexico green enchilada sauce all the time with mine as well as green chile pasole and put them straight on grilled cheese, burgers, tacos....really anything.

That's what we ended up doing with them. My friends family is from New Mexico, so his mom would get us a bunch, fire roast them and then I would chop them up for salsa.
Care to share that enchilada sauce recipe, if you have it handy?

Here is the Green Chile Recipe I use. It is really simple. I will say it can be too spicy for some people. I will put a teaspoon of tomato sauce in at the end if its too spicy and taste. The tomato sauce cuts the heat. Sometimes I add 2 teaspoons. I think the tomato sauce gives it another level of flavor too.

La Morenita might have some--it's a really good Hispanic grocery on Florida at Wooddale in BR. If not, I'm sure you could find some other delicious yummies there, especially at their deli counter.

LaMorenita in Baton Rouge. It's a Mexican supermarket corner of Wooddale and Florida. Great produce section with every variety of pepper available. Try the butcher shop too but you'd better know a little Spanish before you try.

I have had a chili made with ground pork and hatch green chilies that was amazing. It was at Lonesome Dove in Ft Worth.

Late bump, just an FYI the we started seeing Hatch Chiles in the past week here in FL. I'm sure they are elsewhere in LA. Average price is about 89 cents a pound locally.

Hatch chillies are in every store in town. And most are giving them away. Picked up 4 this morning for $.45.

I got a lot of them, already roasted, from Central Market in Fort Worth. Friend brought them. I froze them in small vac seal bags. Delicious.
