How does this work, 26.3 billion in compensation?

The article is written poorly. The widow gets a very small percentage of that amount, even though this doesn't appear to be a class action lawsuit, like the other tobacco cases.
Eta: most of the money goes to anti tobacco ads, smoking cessation programs, public hospitals dealing with patients, etc.

On a general level:
In a suit of this nature, you have 2 types of damages, compensatory and punitive. Compensatory would be for proven losses (like lack of future income, medical expenses). Punitive damages are just that, punitive, they go beyond the compensation for losses (the compensatory damages)and are intended to punish the wrongdoer and deter others for similar actions.
Here the $26.3B was punitive damages.

Ok the lady you have been harrassing at work files a lawsuit against you, you then are subpeona'd to court where you will be found liable for her therapy bills, pain and suffering, lost wages due to missing work because of hostile and perverted atmosphere, and punitive damages. You will be ruined financially, lose your job and pension at post office, be forced into a shelter which you will be kicked out of for excessive drug and alcohol abuse next thing you know you are holding a sign at the red light.

No where. Either the judge reduces it or it gets appealed. Most likely both.

Juries keep awarding these ridiculous punitive figures that do not pass constitutional muster. Compensatories were like $11M. Punitives at a 2600 ratio to compensatories will get tossed pretty quickly.

Average people are usually dumb and easily mislead by big talkers- is it any surprise after 4 years the idiots voters re-elected Obama, a known Maxist follower?
