5.3L V8... Not a mechanical type and I'm curious what type of things I could do to help fuel economy? Air filter, exhaust, computer chip??? Or am I just stuck with what it gets.. Thanks!

Sorry, had to do it.

Not very mechanical myself, but I think that if there was something that you could do to significantly increase your mpg it would probably be so expensive that the actual economic benefit of it would be nil.

A programmer might give a couple mpg.
stay under 20oorpms on interstate.
As heavy as that vehicle is there's not much you can do

Use the skinny pedal less.

No modification is going to make half the difference that changing your driving style will. Get something that monitors your MPGs so you can see what you're doing. Nothing makes you easier on the throttle like seeing live how much money you're wasting.

The difference between putting your cruise on 65 and 72 is pretty incredible in some vehicles.

Intake and exhaust will probably get you 1-2mpg I guess. A full tune-up might also get you 1-2mpg. By full, I mean complete. I can ramble off all of the things, but only will if you really want me to

I think you can monitor instant fuel economy on the dash. If you can't, get a scan gauge 2 and monitor it that way. I wouldn't frick with the computer

I've been monitoring the instant mileage.. Figured there might have been more you could possibly do.. Thanks for the replies!

Okay, I'll give you a list to make it run much better, and probably get better mileage. This will cost a few hundred dollars to do though.

New air filter or complete intake
Clean MAF sensor
Clean throttle body
New plugs(probably go ahead and get wires; I always break at least one removing them and they are cheap)
Flush cooling system with a detergent
Seafoam upper intake
Gumout Regane or some injector cleaner
Fuel filter(kind of a PITA, but might as well do it)
Auto-rx
Change engine oil, transmission fluid, and differential fluids to a good synthetic
Some exhaust kit
Decide if you want your tires to wear properly or get you better mileage and adjust accordingly

Can't think of anything else because I am not looking at an engine right now. All of those can pretty easily be done in your driveway. Plugs and wires are aggravating because there isn't much room to get to the #7 and 8 cylinders. Fuel filter is a PITA because you have to drop half of the tank and finagle your way in there. I haven't screwed with a newer 5.3, so all of that stuff applies to pre-07 stuff

Eta: Might as well swap belt(s) if you're gonna be in there and check idler/tensioner pulleys. You can also use the time to look at things like ball joints to catch something before it becomes a problem

I guess it's not feasible to trade it in for a minivan with a 4cyl?

Use cruise control as much as possible. You're still going to be miserably low on fuel mileage but it will help. It comes with driving a big SUV.
