Do I need to see the previous Planet of the Apes movies? (No spoilers)

Thinking of going to see this here in a bit. I haven't seen any of the other Planet of the Apes movies, except for the one with Mark Wahlberg. Is this a bad idea to go? I've seen it get really good reviews and my buddy who wants to go says I'll be fine and able to follow it. But he's also an a-hole who could just say that because he doesn't wanna see edge of tomorrow

Just watch Rise of the Planet of the Apes. Don't watch anything else before you see it.

I think you should. Do you need to no.

Watching Rise will give you an idea of where the Apes came from, but they also explain it in Dawn, so it won't confuse you either. I would say knowing the back stories of Caesar and Koba are most relevant.

Not necessary IMO. I watched Rise before Dawn, but the new ones can be watched independly without losing any context or understanding. And TBH, the first one is not nearly as good.

Not really. I watched it online yesterday before going to see Dawn but it wasn't exactly necessary. Provided some context and character development for some of the apes though.
ETA: I really enjoyed Dawn apart from the fact that the apes mastered the use of firearms rather quickly.

You def should watch Rise before Dawn. You don't need to watch the old ones though.

If you don't see Rise before you see Dawn, you'll want to go back and see Rise after you've seen Dawn.
Either way, you will win.

It kinda pissed me off when I was at the theater there was someone there who obviously didn't see the first movie, or completely forgot about it. There was one point of the move that was clearly a tie back to the first part and 20 minuets later she finally got it saying "oh that's what that means" (seeing Rise is helpfully right before you see dawn)
she was making small little comments the entire movie was kinda annoying. There was also someone sitting at the edge of the theater whose phone would flash every time she would get a text. That also annoyed be but that is for another time.

I dont get why people are saying he doesn't need to watch rise first. The scenes at his old house and the compassion he has for humans makes no sense without watching the first one. You can't really understand why the Apes are now so intelligent.

Person behind us was explaining (to his non-Rise seeing friend) about the ending of Rise, AS THE INTRO TO DAWN WAS DOING A FANTASTIC JOB OF DOING THE EXPLANATION.

You probably are forgetting that all the apes were genetically mutated to have increased mental capabilities, equal to that of humans. How many times would you have to see someone shoot a gun before knowing how to do it?

Kind of. Helps you to know the prominent apes. More understanding helped me appreciate one of the apes more.

They were giving apes who'd never seen a gun in their lives advanced rifles. They'd have to know how to chamber a round, load a magazine, not to mention aim. And it seemed that they must have developed those unlimited ammo cheats for real life
