Didn't much care for it the first time I saw it. Watching it again and like it much better.

Oh and the Italian prostitute

I don't like Clooney, but that was a great movie. Reminded of the early 70's crime films I love so much. Watch Le Samourai, a 1968 movie by French film director Melville about an assassin in Paris if you like The American.

I had much the same reaction as you upon first view. However, now I love it. I especially appreciate the slow and methodical pacing now, whereas I didn't the first time. Definitely one of my favorite clooney flicks.

I guess I didn't expect it to be like it was. The previews made it out to be an action flick.

Watching it a second time I already knew

I like The Clooney but wasn't a big fan of the movie. Didn't hate it but have no plans to ever watch again.

I don't like Clooney, and quite separately I tend not to like his movies...but Michael clayton was a good little thriller.

That was the great thing about crime films in the late 60's early 70's. They didn't feel like they had to throw an action scene at you every minute. The pacing was much slower and built to a climax that meant something, they didn't just culminate into another action scene that has a little more cgi and explosions than the rest of the movie like they do today.

If you like The American I would recommend:

The Conversation: Coppola
The French Connection: Friedkin
Blow Up: Antonioni
Le Circle Rouge: Melville

I feel that The American was an homage to this type of film and I like Clooney more because he made this film.

There was one I watched a while back with Robert Redford and a famous black guy, but I forget his name. Crime/caper sort of film that seems like it fits what you are saying here with the no need for action every minute thing.

I thought it was great. I think it was very much a European type of film, and many viewers in America were probably expecting something more "Ocean's 12-ish" with zippy one liners.

Great movie though that depicts the end of an assassin's career while also giving insight to what his every day life and internal struggles would be while being one.
