DETROIT – A young man who participated in a mob attack on a Detroit-area motorist needed a father to "beat the hell" out of him as a kid to discourage him from committing such a crime, a judge said Thursday.

The stunning remarks by Wayne County Judge James Callahan came as he sentenced Latrez Cummings to six months in jail.

In response to the judge's question, Cummings, 19, said his father wasn't around when he was growing up.

Callahan said Cummings needed a dad, "someone to discipline you. Someone to beat the hell out of you when you made a mistake, as opposed to allowing you or encouraging you to do it to somebody else."

Me either. But you had a dad... That's the point.

I know his point, but I'm sure some people will see this as advocating child abuse.

Festus, I've never been in front of a judge so I think I've turned out fine

It's incredible how well the Lunch/IM crew knows one another.

yeah, but in the same quote he says beat you "instead of allowing or encouraging you to do it to others"

thats the real problem

even if our dads didn't beat us, they made it clear it wasn't acceptable one way or another

I feel bad for people who can't think of a better way to instill discipline in someone other than beating them.

Only time I ever got beat was when I lied about making a bad grade. The grounding was for the bad grade, the whooping was for the lying.

My dad like to build stuff and well one day he took an old weedeater and put belts on it. He called it the asswhacker. He never used but threatened to on more than one occasion.

To the OP, the judge is right.

I told my daughter I had a contraption like that in the attic. "The spanking-giver."

She bought that line until she was about 12, I think.

"Bad kids" don't turn bad overnight. It takes a pretty long while of neglect and/or shitty parenting for them to be "bad kids". Turing to hitting them because its the only way is just as lazy as not doing the job right the first time.
