LAS VEGAS — The box score says Nerlens Noel had four blocks Monday night against the Cavaliers.

That doesn’t do his game justice.

His length and leaping ability make him an intimidating force in the paint. The guys on the Sixers bench were counting the number of shots Noel altered and said it got into double digits before they lost track.

“When the guards start being a little more timid on their drives and they start shooting a lot more floaters then I know I’m the reason,” Noel said.

Noel gets his offensive points right now mostly through hustle, although he showed a couple post moves and he knocked down an 18-footer Monday.

But is real impact from Day 1 will be on defense. And shot blocking.

Pelicans traded Nerlens and what would become the #10 pick in this years draft for Jrue Holiday. The #10 picks was Elfrid Payton who was then traded to Orlando.

Had they kept Nerlens I assume they would not have traded with Houston for Asik and Casspi while sending out a protected 1st round pick.

I don't think the Pelicans are close to competing for a championship but they are close to a possible 7/8 seed in the playoffs, but is that what they strive for? A team of Davis, Nerlens, Payton (assuming Pelicans would have drafted him) is pretty exciting IMO.

Not posting on Pelicans board because some would see this as a shot at the Pelicans but I'm curious what more basketball fans believe.

Jrue Holiday is a good player. Fringe All-Star player.

They now have Asik, too.

So Asik+Holiday >>> Noel.

Who's their PG if not Holiday?

nahh. they have a roster that can at least compete now (when healthy) and is generally young. the alternative would result in a longer wait to being competitive.

Possible Elfrid Payton, possible anyone else. Not like Holiday really made an impact last year. Rivers wasn't horrible last year although he is more of a second team guy off the bench.

we're gonna play what-ifs and say the Pels would have finished 3rd in the lottery without the Jrue trade, and taken Exum

That would be a very light front court. I want to see Noel in a real life NBA game.

I think for now we are better off with the trade. Holiday and Aski

Noel is doing good in the summer league, lets wait and see what he does in the reg season

Compete for what though? They are not a championship team with Holiday, Davis, Evans, Gordon, and Asik. So if just a playoff berth enough?

Are they a better team than possible young players why of course they are, but now they seem hamstrung by some contracts and they've given up their 1st round pick in consecutive years. Being a small market club is that the way to build a team?

Still too early to tell. Yeah he's looked good in the summer league, but that doesn't always translate to the real games.

As much shite as Bill Simmons gives the Pels about the trade, he said during the recent draft that he viewed Nerles as a future hustle player off the bench. If that's what he eventually turns out to be, then I'm taking Jrue 10/10.

Elfrid Payton? Pass

Rivers is just slightly above horrible.

Of course Holiday made little impact, Eric Gordon played in more games than him.

Not trying to be a homer here, but I think the Pelicans are happy with what they have. They just need to get on the court.

The problem with the Noel/Pelicans argument, which i'm sure will never end, is that the trade gets talked about like the Pelicans traded out of the number 1 pick.

5 other teams passed on Noel, New Orleans was the only one to get a known commodity.

Cleveland passed on him for Anthony Bennett. Orlando for Oladipo. Washington for Otto Porter. Charlotte for Cody Zeller, and Phoenix for Alex Len.

Orlando is the only team in that group that could even argue with a straight face that they would make the same pick.

In the end, I think both Nola and Philly will come out happy with the deal.

it's theoretically exciting, albeir without anybody who can create their own offense

and then our cap would be eaten up once AD gets his supermax deal and that's our roster for forever

even the one team who built through the draft (OKC) ran into that roster-building dilema

With Gordon, Holiday, Evans... Davis would still get his Max deal. Will their deals come off the books before that or will it wreck the cap even more?

Name another small market who has built a championship contender through the draft, other than OKC

Dell is choosing to build his roster around an emerging superstar with proven, young NBA players... rather than take his chances in a draft which often produces busts

Also, being a small market team, he has to overpay to get those guys... its not an ideal situation, but it is what it is.

The internet thinks about 5 NBA teams should try to win games. Everybody else should tank forever.

Because thats the way to keep your star in town. Lose for his entire tenure.
