I am buying a house with an old car still in the garage. It is my understanding that once papers are signed, anything on the property becomes mine.
If that is the case, how can I go about getting a title for the car?
eta: I'm in Louisiana.
The car is a Toyota Corolla hatchback. Not exactly sure on the year. I was told it was a '73.
It was part of a succession so I don't know who owns the car as I have not seen the Judgment of Possession for the succession. For that matter, I've not seen a Letters Testamentary, or Letters of Administration.
I'll ask about the car at closing and see what is what.

Hope the title is in the house.

Ask the people you're buying the house from; if that doesn't work, apply for one.

I'm not so sure it becomes yours as vehicle titles are different.
But you can claim a vehicle after you have had it in your possession for a set amount of time. this time depends on your state's laws.

I checked the abandonment time in Louisiana. It is 3 days on private property. SO I guess I will wait until the end of the week and call the DMV.

3 days?
wow.
That seems too short of a time.

That's what I read from the DMV. 3 days without the owners permission. I may be interpreting it wrong. But I'm sure the DMV will set me straight if I am. Just wasn't sure if anyone knew the process. Really like to get it out of there and do something with it.
its a Toyota corolla hatchback. Was told it was a 73...not to sure on the year.

Post some pictures of the car. It may actually be worth something. Mid 80's corollas are RWD and highly sought after for a certain car community.

I'll have to see about doing that when I get there this evening. If it's not worth much, some buddies of mine want to convert it to a tailgaiting vehicle.
If it ends up being worth some money, to hell with them. I'll sell it. The extra cash will help with fixing up the house.

Figured I'd get one or two of those.
Cheap house.

There is a $600K home in a subdivision by me that has had a 25 year rusted out old piece of shite Oldsmobile broke down in the driveway for the past 4 years. I think the owner has had some run-ins with the HOA. Pretty sure he keeps it there as a big frick you.

That means that the city/parish will come out, put a sticker on it, then if it's not moved, they'll tow it and impound it. It does not mean it is yours after 3 days.
Why don't the sellers just sign the title over to you?

You won't own a car by buying a house. No chance. You would have to get the title from the owner of the car.

I don't know who owns the car. We are buying the house from an heir to the deceased guy who owned it. I may be able to get a copy of the Judgment of Possession to see, but that may take some string pulling.
I'll ask about it at closing. Odds are, the old man doesn't know.

Push the car to the street and then call the cops and report an abandoned car.

Find out who's name the title is in and their last known address. Send them a certified letter stating you a charging them $xx.xx a day storage fee until they remove the car. Dependent upon your states law. After a certain # of days you can obtain legal title to the car due to it being abandoned. You may have to post a legal notice in the paper.
