Had to replace a broken transducer on my boat, goin to put it on tomorrow. It was originally screwed into the transom next to my trim tabs, my uncle told me you can silicone them to the bottom of the boat, "on the inside" of course. Is that possible? Figured that it would interfere with depth. If you can do it that way, what do you do with the holes that are left from where the transducer was placed? Silicone?

Yes with 3M 5200 clear, just make sure you get all the air bubbles out.

What do you do with the holes that are left from where the transducer was placed?

Fill them with 3M 5200 white to match the hull.

You can put them inside of the hull. Not sure if it is a different type of transducer, though.

As for the holes, it depends on the type of hull. Silicon is a bad idea either way. Fiberglass, you should fill with resin, sand, then a layer of clear coat.

Would you replace the screws that went into the hull and just coat them with silicone to seal off the holes?

ETA: Fiberglass hull

Yes you can attach it to the bottom of the boat if the boat has fiberglas hull. I'd use fiberglas resin instead of silicone -- for sure don't have the silicone too thick if you do that roue (and as was said, make sure there are no air bubbles trapped under the transducer).

If you do this with an aluminum hull, you'll lose a LOT of efficiency//clarity.

You can only do this on fiberglass boats if the manufacturer left a spot for it. If you try to do this anywhere, they may be a layer of balsa wood or composite core that will interfere with the transducer.

I know the transom is composite, unsure on the bottom of the boat tho. Im guessing that it would just be fiberglass next to the drain plug

What is the make and model? I would contact the manufacturer, they normally leave a section of core out for this in all of their boats. And it's normally in the same spot in all of their boats.

I agree that thru hull mounting should work but won't temperature monitoring be incorrect?

It could hinder instant temp changes, but overall the temp will transfer thru the resins ad easy as it does the plastic body of the transducer.

OB, call Pathfinder up; they'll be more than happy to help out.

More of an appreciate and recognition post I guess....
Got the chance to mount that transducer today. I opened the package and seen that the mounting bracket is some POS cheap 1"x2" alum junk. The brackets that are on the transom already or some thick black heavy duty looking pieces with (4) 1/4" screws going into my transom. I was going to leave the existing bracket there and just do a thru-hull mount, but once I located the bilge pump, there was no way in hell I could even reach in there to properly do it. Called Cheeks Marine in Pineville who initially had a transducer for me on order but it was on back order for 4 weeks. Told them the problem and they are installing it today free of charge! Cant ask for better service. Got my business for life!
