On a slow summer day and reading the Sammy Martin thread reminded me of one of the best hitters I ever saw. Steve Rehage.
First off, anyone have video of some of his hits (I’m old enough to have seen him play, which makes me too old to know how to link videos). In any case, this guy was a BEAST; I heard at the time he played with concussion etc. and apparently was the same off the field. Was at Tigerland one night when he beat up a buddy of mine bad for (he thought) hitting on his girlfriend. My buddy still denies he hit on her (chicks first name was “Blade”) and still has a scar on his nose from the beating.
I also recall a few key plays so if anyone can find video, please post
Arizona Game 1984, he left a few times after crushing (helmet to helmet) the same WR and in the end they had to take WR off on stretcher.
In ND game 1985 he hit Tim Brown so hard they both got knocked out for a short time
He definitely was a gambling Safety and at times it hurt us, but he played with GREAT heart (and chest). Bama 1985 he got beat late in game on a 3rd and long and grabbed jersey of Bama player to set up tying score.
Lots of rule changes since then, but this guy’s picture should be next to the word “targeting” in the NCAA rule book.

He's also the founder of the Voodoo Music Experience and has apparently done really well with his company (Rehage Entertainment).

For his size , he was an extremely hard hitter . Rape charge was total crap and cost his company the Essence festival . Hell of a guy .....

Unable to prove beyond a reasonable doubt. Such charges were dropped
