Yeah I was just kidding. Merely implying that you probably won't want to put it down.

This one looks interesting. Between Lies and Bloodsong, which would yall recommend?

Hrrmmmm... They are both very good and you can't go wrong with either really. Both have elements of bundigsroman in them. Lies is more the scheming rogue novel with all sorts of cleverness and wit in the writing. Blood Song is more the hero saga.

Depends on your mood really, but overall, I'd say Lies is a little better.

The Raven's Shadow Series is superb. Just finished my re-read of Blood Song and am reading Tower Lord, which just came out.

Great books. Well written. Fast paced. Characters you care about. Intricate plot line. A well developed world. A keen eye for battle detail and historical concepts. Anthony Ryan is truly gifted.

Yeah, just got done reading Blood Song last night, it is fantastic. Reads similar Rothfuss but with a tremendously better plot. Tower Lord seems to be getting pretty meh or negative reviews, hopefully they are wrong.

Personally, I enjoy them a lot more, but I am in a pissed at GRRM stage in my life I guess.

Yep, and I'm not sure what exactly "not on ASOIAF level" means when his last two books haven't been outstanding either. While I enjoyed AFFC and ADWD, I've read a ton of fantasy that's much better than those two books over the past decade.

And Lies of Locke Lamora is one of the top books on that list. I'd agree with Fun Bunch that Lies is one of the best of the last decade. Second book is merely decent, but the last book was very solid.

I'm enjoying it so far (about 100 pages in). My buddy finished it last week and is hounding me to hurry the hell up so we can talk about the craziness that goes down.

I had started Tower Lord on July 1, but finally gave up and said, "I need to re-read Blood Song because I have no fricking idea what is going on." Finished Blood Song the other day finally. Was a helluva read even on second go through. And I hate reading books twice.

I agree with all of this, although I think Feast and Dance are simply bad books. They are terrible compared to the first 3.

When someone says it's the best fantasy book in the last ten years then it needs to be better than "entertaining."

I'm not saying they aren't good but it's not a "best in the last 10 years" type of book

How is that book? Fast paced?

I've read that it's horror but not really. And that it will mess with your mind. Your thoughts (without giving anything away)?

No one is saying that.

They are saying it is one of the best. And it is generally regarded as such. It is incredibly entertaining, witty, twisting and suspenseful.

It is a great book.

Yeah, I'm reading The Girl With All the Gifts right now. When I finish, I'm going to re-read Bloodsong, and then read Tower Lord.

Not exactly. It's a postmodern, horror, love story and a satire on academia. Best way I can describe it. The narrator is unreliable. You never know if he is full of shite or not and the main story is a book about a movie that doesn't exist.

I loved it. It's completely disorienting and it purposefully tries to wear you down by jumping around, having footnotes inside of footnotes and going on long tangents. It's not for everyone but I thought it was well worth it.

Great series as well. Joe Abercrombie meets the setting of Thundarr the Barbarian. Jorg is a great antihero. Anyone who likes the Hound and Bronn from ASOIAF should dig this series. The first book of his next trilogy was solid as well.

I thought they were bad books on my first read through of each, when I was pissed at how long I had waited for each book and how little plot progression there was. But on reading them again I found them much better, though still not great books by any means.

Either way, people that try and act like the quality of the series hasn't dipped a great deal and are still the same quality baffle me. Of course, the same thing went on with Robert Jordan fanboys at the end of his series before he died, so I guess it shouldn't be baffling.

To be fair, the middle of a story is almost always the least interesting. The best parts are the beginning and end, not the build up to the end.

That said, AFFC and ADWD are both great books, they just have too much to live up to. Taken alone, they are very well written, they just aren't as exciting as the others because it's a lot of what's going on now that the shite has hit the fan and people are regrouping to figure out what to do now that the shite is all over the walls.

Taken alone, they are horrible books. They have no flow and just start and stop randomly with certain events, no resolution anywhere, even for minor plot points. It's only as part of the series that they are even decent. But parts of each book are barely readable. Anything having to do with Mereen in ADWD is barely readable, and terribly written. There are entire sections of each book that are basically just killing time until other parts of the story can catch up to the flow and join in. You can tell Martin didn't have a great idea what he wanted to once his original 5 year gap idea didn't work, and it shows in the writing.

And this isn't true in the slightest for most fantasy book series to me, it varies a great deal. ASOS is easily the best book in ASOIAF so far, The best books in Wheel of Time were in the middle. The first book of the First Law trilogy is easily the worst. Malazan my favorites are the 3rd and 5th. Cook's Black Company my favorite is the 3rd.

It's actually tough for me to think of a long series where I liked the first or last books the most, outside of Lies of Locke Lamora in the Gentlemen Bastards series, and that's not finished.

I'm going to bump this for more recommendations. On book 2 of Malazan series, after that I'm thinking either Kingkiller or Mistborn.

Kingkiller is good.

If you haven't read the Gentlemen Bastards Sequence by Scott Lynch, check that out.

Ravens Shadow Series by Anthony Ryan.

Also, Brent Weeks' Night Angel Trilogy and Lightbringer Series are very enjoyable.

I have also enjoyed the Mongoliad series, which is historical fiction set during the Golden Horde's invasion of Christendom around the time of the Crusades.

Apparently the Stormlight Archive is also very good, by Brandon Sanderson.

Michael J. Sullivan's Riyria Revelations is fun and a good read.

Well right, I suppose I didn't mean it that way. I meant that when you compare them to the first 3, and really book 1 and 3, they aren't that good, but when compared to the genre as a whole, they are still pretty damn good.

As for starting and stopping, I didn't get that, though I hated the set up. I wish he would have just told his publisher to frick off and finished writing the books as he wanted to, which was actually one giant arse book.

I disagree with the notion that any part of the books is terribly written, but it has been some time since I read them, so I may be remembering them with nostalgia. I do remember thinking, "Okay, who gives a shite? Move on" a couple times, but I feel that way about a lot of fiction, including Patrick Rothfuss, who tarries way too long on unimportant shite like sex nymphs.
