This was mentioned in the drug legalization thread, but I think its worth of its own discussion.

Currently, we severely curtail the use of alcohol publicly. There are limits to where you can drink and how much. In CO, you cannot publicly consume cannabis.

What about a partial ban of smoking outside of your personal property? No smoking in parks (drinking beer in parks is illegal where i live but not enforced), no smoking in front of door entrances (like california), no smoking on gov't grounds, no smoking on patios of bars. We could have designated smoking areas in clusters of businesses.

Personally I would love this from not having to deal with the smoke but its really anti-freedom IMHO.

it is anti freedom

it is unconstitutional in terms of forcing private enterprises to comply

Lots of major cities have gone this route (including prohibitions at indoor public establishments) and I support it whole-heartedly. I remember the days of going out on the weekend and coming home smelling like smoke. Don't miss them.

I believe the last 5 hotels I stayed in were 100% smoke free.

This. I HATE tobacco smoke. My SO is allergic to it, but I would never deny someone their rights as an American to smoke it in public.

The deleterious effects of second-hand smoke are very, very well documented. You don't have the right to make me share your habit with you.

Are health codes against the constitution as well?

yeah, this is completely constitutional. businesses already told they can't let you smoke in them. I haven't even heard of a challenge to that.

I used to smoke cigarettes, and still have one every now and then, and they absolutely should be cutailed in public use. They're nasty, but they sure can be delicious sometimes.

No problem at all with indoor smoking bans in public buildings.

On private property, I agree that smoking should be banned indoors, but that's personal preference.
Should be up to the discretion of the business owner. If people don't like that smoking is allowed indoors, then they can take their business elsewhere.

Outdoor smoking bans are dumb, and are really just symbolic gestures that say "We care about health, and don't like smoking. Yay!"

People who toss their butts on the ground should get cited for littering though.

The obvious compromise is to designate certain areas of a park to allow smoking.

The smoking lobby isn't interesting compromise, though, and it means 20 years from now tobacco will basically be non-existent in public.

How much smoke does there have to be to notice it in a park?

Thought there for a minute you were talking about all tobacco. My snuff lip was starting to quiver.

Smoking is banned in restaurants in some states. should be all. Banned on public transportation and all public buildings. It is disgusting. Funny how you see people standing outside Hospitals smoking.

Ban in all public parks, etc. Why doesn't Disney make the park smoke free 100%?

it worked well for them in the 80s/90s but its going to mean that smoking just goes away in NA. Developing countries are already getting on board with this. While I saw a ton of smokers when I was in africa, smoking indoors was banned in both zambia and south africa. They even banned it on the patio at a bar I went to in Lusaka. Craziness

This is already happening. There is a complete smoking ban on the Ole Miss campus (including the outside)

They did this at UGA too.

They've already found that it's virtually impossible to enforce, and you honestly wouldn't know that there was a smoking ban in effect if you walked through campus. People just ignore it and light up anyway.

It's the same way here. There are smoking ban signs everywhere. But people ignore it.

I smoke but rarely in public and never in front of kids. Really the only time I smoke in public is outside a bar where others are smoking. I dont have a problem with any of the bans except on personal property.
