Cruising in the Confederations Cup gave the expected starting xi an entire year of pretty much an assured place without any competition. Fred scoring goals gave Scolari an irrational confidence in him when it was apparent he was out of depth in this tournament. Destroying a Spain team that was past its prime, which no one knew at the time, gave this teams fans unrealistic expectations regarding the quality of the side. While a team like the US or Mexico overachieved after numerous changes to the squad the past year, Brazil seemed complacent.

No, Brazil wasn't that good.

There was individual talent but the team is young. They almost lost to Mexico in their pool. Honestly, I was surprised they got past Chile and Columbia. Now, I'm not saying Germany is 7 goals better.

Yea. I think it gave them a false sense of how good they were. That and no qualifying.

I think you're onto something about the "no qualifying" thing. Yes, the Confederations Cup was a competitive tournament. It's not viewed in nearly the same light as the World Cup though. There was much less pressure on both Brazil and their opponents, so I would hazard a guess that the games were not nearly as competitively charged. Qualifying is probably much more intense than even the Confederations Cup. It can certainly serve to battle harden teams. Today especially, and really for the entire tournament, Brazil has lacked that extra bit of fluidity and cohesiveness that could have helped them massively.

It's hard to say. On one hand, it can be said it made them over-confident. On the flipside, it could have provided swagger needed to win this WC. The result doesn't validate one argument over the other. Personally, I would say it was a factor because it overstated the ability of clowns like Fred who were good in the Confed Cup.

The bigger causes for Brazil's exit:

1. False sense that national pride and homefield advantage and more important than tactics and discipline
2. Relying on scrubs like Fred and Jo for goals - very poor by Brazil standards
3. Silva and Neymar missing for Germany was clearly crippling

Brazil lacks leadership honestly and unlike their teams in the 90's, 2000's and the Pele teams, their players aren't leaders.

Neymar is their best player on this team and he wouldn't come close to being top 3 on their teams from the those times. After him its a huge dropoff and while they have very good individual defenders, none have the discipline outside of Silva to really control a defense.

Also, without an extremely vocal goalie (Cesar is definitely not that during play), losing your defensive captain will result in disaster.

Also, this Brazil team is simply mentally weak. You could see after the 1st goal, they panicked and then lost everything after the second one.

In the end, Scolari is a decent coach, but was very lucky to have the run of talent he did in previous cups before 2010. Not enough talent or mental toughness on this team to be championship material.

As for the game yesterday, I liken it to the Netherlands/Spain game. The Dutch and Germans aren't that significantly better than their opponents as the score would indicate, but horrible defensive form and blown assignments killed Brazil and Spain in those games making them look worse than they are and their opponents better than they are.

True. They were mental midgets.

Talent-wise, the starting 11 they posted yesterday was mediocre, IMO.

If you had looked at the score sheet pregame and it didn't have "Brazil" written on top, you would've predicted Germany would have been the clear favorite.

Right. Just 6 goals better.
